More water shortages in Joburg

More water shortages are expected in and around Johannesburg due to depleted water supply in four reservoirs, Johannesburg Water said on Saturday.

Affected areas would include Malvern, Benrose, Denver, Wesdene, Coronationville, Winchester Hills Ext 3, Thulisa Park, Rosettenville, Bezuidenhout Valley, Kensington, Risana, South Hills, Quellerina, Waterval, Bergbron, Whiteridge, Robertsham and surrounding areas, spokeswoman Millicent Kabwe said in a statement.

Temporary water tanks had been set up in South Hills, Malvern and Wesdene.

"We are in the process of deploying more water tanks to other affected areas."

Kabwe said Rand Water was having problems at their pump stations, which was not feeding into the reservoirs at a normal rate.

"They are working on rectifying the situation and we are expecting the water supply to improve by tomorrow," Kabwe said.

Low water pressure levels may be experienced in Hursthill, Honeydew, Crown Garden, Linden, Brixton, Helderkruin, Horizon, Parktown and Kensington areas, she said.

Earlier, Ekurhuleni municipality said the water supply in parts of the area had been switched off, to allow a reservoir to fill.

The areas affected were Germiston, Benoni, Etwatwa, Daveyton and Tsakane.

The water supply issues were caused by erratic bulk water supply from Rand Water and unprecedented high water demand driven by hot weather and panic storage of water in large quantities.

"Engineers from Ekurhuleni and Rand Water are working around the clock to restore and stabilise the water supply as soon as possible," spokesman Themba Gadebe.

He urged consumers to use water sparingly by avoiding irrigation, washing of cars, using hose pipes and filling of swimming pools.

"The Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality will ensure that roving water tankers are dispatched to all areas experiencing low water pressure and no water in various parts of the region."

Rand Water said on Saturday morning, other parts of Johannesburg had also experienced water shortages.

The situation had started on Monday when a power outage at the Eikenhof pumping station meant water could not be pumped into reservoirs, Rand Water spokesman Justice Mohale said in a statement.

He said it became difficult for the water levels to stabilise during periods of high demand.

"This resulted in Rand Water [being] unable to pump water to some of our reservoirs, supplying mainly western and south of Johannesburg, parts of the west rand and Ekurhuleni," he said.

Does anyone know about how to go about giving you number to your regional municipality or the likes for getting notifications on water shortages?

Most suburbs of Tshwane were without water on Tuesday following problems with the Palmiet pump station, the city said.

"The situation should be normal late at night as it is taking long to feed the entire Gauteng system, which supplies water to the City of Johannesburg, the City of Ekurhuleni, and the City of Tshwane."

There had been problems with Gauteng's water supply since last Monday.

Four pump stations were affected at different times. Cable theft early on Monday left the Palmiet pump station unable to operate, but power was restored later that day.

The reservoirs affected were Pretoria One, Two and Three, Rooihuiskraal, Brakfontein, Loulardia, Erasmia, The Reeds, Laudium, Akasia, Magalies, Constantia Park, Pretoria, Waterkloof, Lotus Gardens, Soshanguve, and Mabopane.

Ga-Rankuwa, Atteridgeville, Pierre van Ryneveld, Monument Park, Klapperkop, Clifton, and Hartbeeshoek were also affected.

The reservoirs not affected were Grootfontein, Elarduspark, Garsfontein, Parkmore, and Koedoesnek.

"The city apologises for the inconvenience caused to the affected residents."

Hey? I am at work, didn't notice anything before I left home. There will be hell to pay of there is no water when I get home....:mad: Bloody hell.
 
Some of Pretoria is fed via the Roodeplaat dam, which means that North East Pretoria is still okay. I propose braai day be moved to Roodeplaat dam :)
 
This is such a load of bull**** though. Our water suddenly disappeared yesterday - found out the entire neighbourhood had none, either. Phone the municipality, and "eish we don't know how long it will be off. It's a best water pipe". Meanwhile, I'd just seen the reports on News24 also giving various reasons for the apparent outage - power problems at the pumping stations, dry weather, apartheid, etc. My theory is they're now attempting "loadshedding" with our most valuable resource. Later that evening, water was restored. I'd phoned the municipality again and spoken to someone else, who had no information regarding a burst pipe. A friend of mine hasn't had water (or electricity) in his area since Friday.

I lived in the Cape for most of life, and we endured annual droughts. We used to get notifications of short supply, and were advised of what to do to reduce consumption. The water was never just SHUT OFF. It wouldn't surprise me if, like the power stations, the water plants are now also ****ed because of a lack of foresite and basic maintenance! :mad:

Well done cANCer you are doing a good job of running this country into the ground.
Not enough electricity not enough water but plenty crime and corruption.
