Yesterday someone from "Telkom" phoned my dad(not sure if it was on the Telkom line or his cell) and said that due to the cost of replacing copper wire all the time, they have decided to discontinue ADSL service in the Randfontein area from the end of this month onward. He then tried to get him to sign up for a contract for a 3G WiFi modem.

I've been looking for anything related to this, but haven't found anything yet. Has anyone else heard anything about this? Is it (hopefully) a sick joke or scam??

I have heard of areas within an exchange being moved to a FLLA service but not an entire exchange.

Contact TelkomZA via a PM and ask them to confirm, using your specific number.

I have heard about it, apparently it's got to do with the high theft rate of cables in the area and Randfontein exchange not being as profitable has led TELKOM to this, but it is still a good idea to wait for the discontinuation to happen before signing up for the first available offer sold by someone with no technical expertise.
