I am using a Telkom Netgear DG834GUv5 Modem with an Axxess Express+ account with my line synched at 4096. I get random disconnects from Axxess, and they say say it is Telkom, and Telkom say they can't see a problem, speak to Axxess. My line stays synched, but the little 'internet' light on the modem starts flashing and then eventually goes red and I can't connect to the internet.

If I reboot the router, it may take 4-5 attempts before everything works again. I can't figure out what I need to do to fix this. If I go and look at http://users.isdsl.net/, I can see dozens of 'PPP-Rcv-Terminate-Req', but I am not issuing those requests. When I change to another Axxess account or physically switch off the router, the message says 'Connection-Closed'.

Worst of all is that it will work great for a few days and then it may be unstable for a day or so...and then work great again. I have the password for my accounts stored in the router and it is set to automatically reconnect if it fails. Both my Router and my lan connection have the preferred DNS servers loaded. I changed this to 'Automatically obtain from ISP...but this also didn't work.

Anyone who has some ideas on what to try next?

I had exactly the same problem. It is basically line "noise" that disconnects you.
Ping a local website - if you get pings and every now and then you get a timeout, you can almost be sure that is the problem.
If so, then the ONLY solution is a telkom technician must physically investigate your connection between your house and the exchange/dslam. Somewhere on that route noise is creeping in due to a bad connection, moisture on the line etc.

BTW - they pumped about 500L of water out of my local "termination" box where al the house lines connect into. That dried out and the problem was solved.

Ok cool. I have a line attenuation of 53.5db. Just got off the phione with Telkom. They are of the opinion that 55db is the limit for ADSL and that I am within 'acceptable' limits so they won't open a ticket for me. I take it that dropping the speed won't help me with the noise problem...eish what now...any ideas on how to increase the noise to over 55db so they will come and look?

plug a handset into adsl wall socket. pick up ur handset. Is there static?

Phone them if you hear static. If they ask about attenuation play dumb. Tell them you hear static & they need to look into it.

They will then open a ticket. Dont offer them info you don't need ....

Play dumb, it works best

Get a new router I recently changed my router and all my problems were over!

Hi

Line for sure, i believe the term the Telkom guys use is 'metalic noise'. What firware version are you using on your router?

Having a similar problem. Cyclone's explanation seems to apply to my case. I get random ping timeouts and it happens intermittently; sometimes the line works fine and sometimes it does not. I have some static noise on my phone line occasionally. Downstream attenuation is 44db. I remain sync'ed with the ISP. I reckon my situation is thus the same as yours. Tried to rectify it and still am trying, but here's where I got at so far (it might help, don't know):

Phoned ISP that has my line migrated to (I have 2 ISP's and the same problem occurs on both, thus the problem lies with my line). ISP says they don't see a problem on the line (it sync's). Router tested OK, POTS filter tested OK, got Telkom techie (didn't test my line, I wish I forced him to) who didn't find anything but sendta request to Telkom to reset my port on the DSLAM, no success thus far. I have found, however, that the problem got worse and at one point I could ask my ISP to reset my port and my router would ping fine for a while, after which it starts getting timeouts again.

I have fine local pings at the moment, the second they go haywire again I'm calling Telkom to log another fault.

I will have to check the firmware version. I haven't changed whatever version came with the router (purchased Jan 2010). I have managed to secure an alternate modem from a buddy and will test it later this afternoon. Just running out and spending (yet another) R1000 on a modem to prove that it is the line is a bit harsh :). I have reported noise on the line to Telkom and they have opened a ticket, no ETA on a techie yet though.

Thanks for all the tips. I managed to loan a 105WR Telkom router for the night. Set it up and instantly connected and haven't had an ISP or ADSL re-synch since. I definitely think the router is at fault. I went from 20-30 resets in a 24 hour period to zero. Another strange thing I noticed while I was busy. The Netgear router reported attenuation of 53-54db while the 105WR reported 49db. I double checked this as it seemed really odd, but the results where the same. I hope to exchange the router/modem at the Telkom store today (bought it in Jan 2010) and hopefully get a new one.

Router Exchanged...Billion 400G..Did 40Gb downloads over the weekend. Very happy camper...thx all for the comments / help
