'The Evoque will open the brand to a new group of customers' - MD Phil Popham​

It will be the smallest, lightest and most fuel-efficient Range Rover yet, says the maker, with a choice either two or all-wheel drive and CO2 emissions of less than 130g/km.

Land Rover managing director Phil Popham said: "The Range Rover is one of the most highly regarded vehicles in the history of motoring and has been a continuing success since we introduced it in 1970.

"The Evoque is an important step for the growth of Range Rover. Customers can be confident that the new car will be premium, luxurious and just as special as the other Range Rover models - but it will open the brand to a new group of customers who may not have considered a Range Rover before

Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern said: "The Range Rover is an iconic design that has stood the test of time; it's a simple and memorable shape that's easily recognisable.

"The Evoque marks a bold evolution of Range Rover design, providing customers with a compact, car-like SUV. The 2008 LRX concept car was positively received worldwide so the natural next step was make it a reality - and we've delivered a car that completely represents that spirit.

The Evoque will make its public debut at the Paris auto show at the end of September 2010 and will go on sale from mid-2011.
