Land Rover has confirmed that a fourth model is set to join the Range Rover family, revealing the first official images of the newcomer and confirming its name in the process. Yes, it will be called the Range Rover Velar.

Set to make its official debut at March 1, the new SUV will be positioned between the Evoque and the Sport (see sketch below), and go up against the likes of the Porsche Macan.

Although official details are still scarce, the British automaker claims that the newcomer will be defined by its “elegant simplicity”, “visually reductive approach” and “pioneering consumer technology”.

“We call the Velar the avant garde Range Rover. It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything,” said Land Rover chief design officer, Gerry McGovern.

Range Rover says the Velar will feature “unique sustainable materials and advanced engineering”, hinting that it will retain the all-terrain ability for which the brand has become known.

So, where does the name “Velar” come from? Well, Land Rover says it dates back to the first Range Rover prototypes of the 1960s.

“When development engineers needed to hide the true identity of the 26 pre-production Range Rovers, they chose the name ‘Velar’, derived from the Latin velare, meaning to veil or cover,” the automaker said.

Expect to learn more about the new Range Rover Velar at the start of March.

Range Rover Velar to make world debut

• Positioned between Evoque and Range Rover Sport
• Velar name derived from 1969 prototypes
• World premiere on March 1 2017

The luxury SUV was created in 1970 when Land Rover launched the original Range Rover. Almost half a century later, the company will introduce the fourth member of the Range Rover family, to be unveiled on March 1 2017.

Elegant simplicity, a visually reductive approach and pioneering consumer technology are the hallmarks of the new Range Rover Velar.

Harks back to RR prototypes

Land Rover Chief Design Officer, Gerry McGovern said: “We call the Velar the avant-garde Range Rover, It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything.”

The automaker says the Velar is 'refined for every occasion, for every terrain, Velar uses unique sustainable materials and advanced engineering'.

The origin of the Velar name (pronounced vel-ar) dates back to the first Range Rover prototypes of the 60s.

When development engineers needed to hide the true identity of the 26 pre-production Range Rovers, they chose the name Velar, derived from the Latin velare meaning to veil or cover.

Full details of the Range Rover Velar will be announced on 1 March 2017.

New Range Rover Velar SUV Teased

The Range Rover family is expanding with the imminent reveal of the Velar SUV to be shown at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show.

There’s a new SUV on its way from Range Rover and it’s called the Velar. The new Velar SUV will take its place in the Range Rover stable, slotting between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport. The Velar is derived from the Latin name verlare meaning veil or cover, originally used to conceal the identity of Range Rover prototypes of 1969. The new model will make its public appearance at the Geneva Motor Show early in March 2017.

“We call the Velar the avant-garde Range Rover. It brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the brand. The Range Rover Velar changes everything,” said Land Rover Chief Design Officer, Gerry McGovern.

According to Land Rover, the Velar embodies “elegant simplicity, a visually reductive approach and pioneering consumer technology”. Furthermore, the new model is said to adopt sustainable materials and advanced engineering and will be capable for any occasion and terrain.

More details regarding the Range Rover Velar will be revealed on 1 March 2017 and we will surely keep you updated as more information becomes available.

Velar is a new member of the Range Rover family

Land Rover has given us our first peek at a brand new member of its Range Rover family, ahead of the SUV’s full reveal on March 1.

The newcomer will be called the Range Rover Velar and it’ll fill the gap between the compact Evoque and the larger Range Rover Sport, and its most direct rivals are likely to be the Porsche Macan and JLR’s own Jaguar F-Pace.

Land Rover’s design boss Gerry McGovern said that the Velar brings “a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance” to the brand, but the company hasn’t released any concrete details about the new entrant. Expect it to offer the latest array of Ingenium four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and diesel engines as well as the firm’s supercharged V6.

We’ll also have to wait until the beginning of next month to see the full design as the images released by Land Rover only show the rear end, roof line and a bit of the interior. Compared to its Rangie siblings, the Velar has a more pronounced shoulder line that sweeps into the boot lip and the sloping tailgate angle suggests that they’re going to refer to it a cross-coupé of sorts.

But what does Velar mean? That name’s been taken from the early disguised Range Rover prototypes of 1969, with Velar having been derived from the Latin word ‘velare’, which means to veil or cover.

Range Rover Velar to be revealed tomorrow evening

The Range Rover Velar will be officially unveiled tomorrow at 8:15pm, one week after the first preview image was released by Land Rover.

Ahead of its imminent arrival, the car's interior has been spied by a user on the Disco3 online forum.

When it arrives, the model will sit between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport in the brand’s line-up and introduce an all-new interior design language for the firm.

As the fourth model in the line-up, the mid-sized SUV is described by Range Rover as “filling the white space between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport”. It is a vital price point for Range Rover, plugging the gap between the £40,000 Evoque and £80,000 Sport and challenging important rivals such as the Porsche Macan and BMW X6.

Range Rover Velar to join UK’s best-selling luxury model line-up

Land Rover’s premium model range contributes £10 billion to economy and makes up 85% of all luxury cars built

The Range Rover Velar is being launched into a family of models that contribute £10 billion to the UK economy each year.

This makes the Range Rover Britain’s biggest luxury export, and one that accounts for 85% of all luxury vehicles built here.

When it is launched later today, the Velar will be the fourth Range Rover to reach the market. It’ll be sold in 100 markets globally from the summer, slotting into a segment dominated by cars like the Porsche Macan and Jaguar F-Pace.

The strong sales of this mid-size SUV class mean Velar is expected to significantly increase the Range Rover family’s success internationally.

Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth said in the run up to the car’s reveal “The expansion of our product range and building this British designed and engineered car in the UK is a sign of our confidence in British manufacturing.

“We are leading the global premium car industry with our commitment to our home market and our heart, soul and headquarters will always be in the UK.”

The Velar arrives after JLR invested £1.5 billion into its Solihull manufacturing plant, where it the new model will be built alongside the Jaguar XE and F-Pace. Solihull is one of four JLR UK manufacturing plants, with 40,000 people employed across the sites. Land Rover said its business supports 250,000 jobs in the wider supply chain.

Covers will be pulled off the Velar at 8:15pm tonight. The model will sit between the Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport in Land Rover’s line-up

Official press pics out. What a looker.

The Land Rover Range Rover Velar brings a new dimension of glamour, modernity and elegance to the Range Rover family. Designed to fill the white space between Range Rover Evoque and Range Rover Sport, Velar offers levels of luxury, refinement and all-terrain capability never before seen in the mid-size SUV segment. This is a new type of Range Rover for a new type of customer.

Jaguar Land Rover UK Managing Director, Jeremy Hicks said: "The new Range Rover Velar is a stunning addition to the Range Rover family, it enhances a model line-up that originally defined the luxury SUV segment and continues to do so. Velar brings increased choice to new and existing customers in a growing SUV market. It leads the way in terms of design, usable technology, new materials and of course Land Rover's legendary go anywhere, do anything capability. The whole team is enormously excited about bringing the new Range Rover Velar to customers across the UK."

Land Rover Range Rover Velar is defined by a visually reductive approach and meticulous attention to precision in every detail, which evolves the Range Rover DNA.

Velar's design is beautifully balanced, from its powerful proportions to its continuous waist line through to the taut tapered lines of the rear. The generous wheelbase contributes significantly to its elegance while helping to provide a spacious interior.

The large alloy wheels - in particular the range of 22-inch designs - optimise the vehicle's stunning silhouette, while further enhancing Velar's dramatic presence.

Advanced technology is pivotal to the contemporary design: the full-LED headlights are the most slender ever to appear on a production Land Rover vehicle. The flush deployable door handles emphasise Velar's reductive, sculptured form, and contribute to the low drag coefficient from only 0.32 - this is the most aerodynamically-efficient Land Rover ever produced.

Look inside Velar's interior and you will see elegant simplicity, sophistication and refinement. An unwavering belief in reductionism has been fully employed, with switches being kept to an absolute minimum to help create a calm sanctuary.

This is the (confirmed for SA!) Range Rover Velar...

After the obligatory teasers and leaks, Land Rover has finally fully revealed the new Range Rover Velar, the fourth model in the Range Rover family.

The new mid-size luxury SUV slots into the British automaker’s line-up between the Range Rover Evoque and the Range Rover Sport, with the brand billing it as a product for a “new type of customer”.

Land Rover SA says the all-new Velar will go on sale in South Africa in the fourth quarter of 2017, with pricing set to be released closer to launch.

With a wheelbase measuring 2 874 mm, the Velar employs an aluminium-intensive body, together with double-wishbone front suspension and integral link rear suspension. Together with its all-wheel-drive system and four-corner air suspension, the Velar offers a ground clearance of 251 mm and a wading depth of 650 mm (or 213 mm and 600mm respectively, with coil springs).

The newcomer will be offered with a range of six petrol and diesel powertrains, each matched to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.

Four-cylinder Ingenium diesels will be offered in 132 kW and 177 kW variants, while a four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine that delivers 184 kW will also be available. A 221 kW version of this mill is expected to join the Velar range in early 2018.

There will also be a 700 N.m V6 diesel, while the 280 kW supercharged V6 petrol unit will allow the range-topping Velar to reach 100 km/h from standstill in 5,7 seconds.

Range Rover Velar officially revealed

The all-new Range Rover Velar, the fourth member of an expanded Range Rover family, is described by its chief designer as the most “car-like” model the off-road brand has produced.

Revealed at a special event in London ahead of its public debut at the Geneva motor show, the Velar is underpinned by the same technology as the similarly sized Jaguar F-Pace. It will slot between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport in Land Rover’s range.

Pricing for the Velar

The Velar will be priced from £44,830 and go on sale this summer. Land Rover’s new Porsche Macan rival is called “the most car-like Range Rover we’ve done so far, but just as capable” by Land Rover design director Gerry McGovern. “It’s a new type of Range Rover for a new type of customer,” he added.

Since releasing a so-called teaser image one week ago - a picture of the Velar from above with a panoramic sunroof showing some of the dashboard and screen set-up - 40,000 customers have registered interest in the model with 12,000 of those in the UK, according to Land Rover.

The car also ushers in a new, more high-tech Land Rover interior design that is expected to be rolled out across the rest of the range as the next generation of models is introduced.

The Velar shares its 2874mm wheelbase and aluminium architecture with the F-Pace, alongside which it will be built at the Solihull plant of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).

Unlike the F-Pace, the Velar is all-wheel drive only and comes with Land Rover’s full suite of off-road technology, including Terrain Response 2. Wade depth is 650mm. The Velar is also a touch longer than the F-Pace, at 4.8m.

While the model is fully capable for off-roading, it has been developed as the most road-biased model yet in the Range Rover line-up. "As a mid-sized SUV, it has less inertia [than larger models in the line-up]," said David Doody, vehicle programme director. "It's a lot more agile. The intention is that it's a lot more sporty than a full Range Rover."

Velar engine specs include range-topping V6 petrol and diesel

Buyers will be able to choose from six engines, each driving through an eight-speed automatic gearbox. There’s a base 2.0-litre four-cylinder Ingenium diesel unit in 178bhp and 237bhp guises. The entry-level petrol engine is a new 2.0-litre Ingenium unit with 247bhp. A more potent 296bhp version of this engine will follow by the end of this year.

The V6 range-toppers are 296bhp diesel and 375bhp petrol engines. The petrol V6 is supercharged — the only non-turbo engine in the range — and will power the Velar from zero to 60mph in 5.3sec.

At the other end of the scale, the entry-level diesel is the most efficient, with CO2 emissions of 142g/km.

In time, JLR’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) arm is expected to turn out its own versions of the Velar. McGovern said SVO would typically create one special model per range, as seen with the potent SVR version of the Range Rover Sport and the more luxurious SVAutobiography version of the Range Rover.

However, McGovern said the Velar’s broad remit and character potentially allowed for both more luxurious and sporting versions of the Velar.

McGovern called the Velar’s look a “masterclass in design reduction”. He said: “It’s reduction by design and engineering. If something is on the car, you take it off and it makes no difference, it shouldn’t be there anyway.”

McGovern said the Velar is the most aerodynamic Land Rover yet and its design has changed little in the three years since it was first presented internally. "The real test [of good car design] is the transition from a concept car to production, and how much the design is diluted. With the Velar, it has hardly changed at all, even less so than was the case with the Evoque."

Despite the Velar’s more stripped-back look, McGovern doesn’t consider it to have a new design language but instead regards it as an evolution. “The newest thing will always look the most modern,” he said. “It’s just progression.”

Among the Velar’s various trims, two distinct flavours stand out: a sportier-looking R Dynamic model and a plusher, more luxurious HSE. For the first year of production, Land Rover will offer an £85,450 First Edition that’s even more luxurious than the HSE. The cost of that model, almost double the price of the entry-level version, shows how broad the Velar’s market coverage is. The typical purchase price is expected to be about £61,000.

Velar interior includes two 10in touchscreens

The key feature of the Velar’s interior is a new Touch Pro Duo infotainment system with two 10in touchscreens, described as “secret till lit”. Between them, these configurable displays reduce switchgear to an absolute minimum, while the lower part of the centre console ahead of the gear and Terrain Response selectors is turned into a screen itself.

The car’s chief engineer, Kevin Stride, said the interior had been designed around these screens. The brief was to get rid of as much switchgear as possible while still making it usable and engaging.

Stride said the more conventional upper touchscreen housed less frequently changed information, which is the opposite of the lower screen. However, the system is fully configurable, with the lower screen given “lightning-fast responses” to ensure there is no lag in functions traditionally controlled by a button.

Integrating all of the screens into the design has created a far more modern look, and it’s backed up with technology such as a wi-fi hotspot for up to eight devices.

Land Rover also claims the Velar is the most practical car in its class, with a set of key rivals across the range’s price band identified as BMW’s X4 and X6, the Macan and Mercedes-Benz’s GLE. The boot capacity is a claimed 673 litres and the rear seats split 40/20/40. Stride said there is plenty of leg- and head-room in the back "even with the sliding roofline". There are also powered reclining rear seats.

A wide range of trims and colour schemes is offered on the Velar, including a new Premium Textile one, which removes all leather from the cabin in response to a growing number of customers wanting a premium alternative to leather for greater sustainability.

Other tech highlights include laser spotlights, touchpads on the steering wheel to control certain key interior and driving functions, an active rear locking e-differential and gesture control to open the tailgate.

A Torque Vectoring by Braking system is standard on the Velar, which has double-wishbone front and integral-link rear suspension. Air springs are standard on V6 cars and optional on the more powerful four-cylinder models.

Key to the Velar’s dynamic credentials is a system called Configurable Dynamics, which allows for stiffer suspension, improved throttle response and reduced assistance for the power steering. It’s standard on the First Edition and optional across the rest of the range.

Range Rover Velar expected to be UK sales hit

Jaguar Land Rover has been "flabbergasted" by the early response to the Velar, with huge interest being shown in the new SUV

Land Rover is already confident of bumper local sales with its new Macan-chasing mid-sized SUV - the Velar.

According to JLR's UK managing director Jeremy Hicks, after just six days of public awareness of the Velar, the company's score of KMIs (Keep Me Informed requests) had passed 12,000, compared with around 3000 for the Evoque - itself a spectacular seller - in the same period.

"We're flabbergasted at the response," says Hicks, "because it's based only on a silhouette and some pretty sketchy information. I'm especially confident that Velar will sell well to former estate car owners because it has all the appeal of 'Allroad' style vehicles but a fair bit more all-round capability."

Hicks says true indications of the Solihull-built model's UK potential won't be known for several months - orders start to flow tonight and first deliveries won't be made until summer - but Evoque sales here last year set a new record of 27,000 units, while the Range Rover Sport (the model above Velar) scored 12,000 sales. "Full year sales of 20,000 units would be a very good figure indeed," says Hicks.

JLR aims to give the Velar a strong send-off by selling an initial 250 special First Edition models to early adopters. "The earliest buyers tend to be especially loyal buyers of our products," says Hicks, "and they always load them with equipment. So, this time, we're doing the job for them."

Range Rover has officially revealed the Velar, the vehicle that fills 'the gap' between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport.

The Velar will officially debut at the Geneva motor show next week, but Range Rover has already taken the covers off for its internet debut. The Velar sits on the same platform as the Jaguar F-Pace, featuring a light and stiff aluminium structure. Intrinsic to Range Rover's philosophy is all-terrain capability, which the Velar is imbued with. All-wheel drive is standard fitment and there's the option to add Range Rover's legendary Terrain Response 2 system. There are further off-road systems available with All Terrain Progress Control, Low Traction Launch, Hill Descent Control and Gradient Release Control. Ground clearance is impressive with the air suspension models sitting 251 mm off the ground and the coil spring versions 213 mm off the ground. Air suspension is standard on the V6 models and available as an optional extra on the other models. All models have adaptable dynamics to adjust the ride comfort.

Engine lineup

There are both turbodiesel and turbopetrol engines available in 4 and 6-cylinder configuration. At the entry end of the Velar engine range there is a 2-litre turbodiesel engine available with 132 kW/430 Nm. The upgrade of this is the twin-turbo Ingenium engine which delivers 176 kW/500 Nm with little effect on the fuel consumption compared to the entry engine. The third diesel option in the range is the 3.0-litre V6, similar to the F-Pace. It delivers 221 kW and 700 Nm of torque. Two petrol engines are also an option with the new 2.0-litre Ingenium engine putting out 184 kW and 365 Nm. The top of the range petrol is the supercharged V6 that cranks out 280 kW and 450 Nm of torque. This engine rockets the large SUV to 100 kph in just 5.3 seconds. all engines are mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

New infotainment system

Range Rover is debuting a new technology which it calls Touch Pro Duo. The system features two 10-inch high-definition touchscreens one above the other. The top screen deals with all the infotainment requirements such as media, navigation and phone connections. This screen also tilts by up to 30-degrees so the driver can set it at the right angle if there's sun or glare coming off the screen. The bottom screen now includes what used to be button controlled options on Range Rovers. The touchscreen deals with climate control and terrain response settings. There are 2 USB ports up front and another two for the rear occupants and three 12V socket ports throughout the Velar. A waterproof activity key is available, much like what first debuted on the F-Pace, it allows the key to be left in the car whilst the owner wears a shock and waterproof transponder that when pressed to the badge on the tailgate, will open the boot.

Interior

The Velar claims to have ample space for all occupants and features a large, 632-litre boot. Once the seats are folded flat, it opens up 1 731-litres of load space. The rear seats can be lowered from the boot with 2 levers that quickly unlock the seats allowing them to flop down. The boot has a gesture operated tailgate that opens with a kick action below the rear bumper.
