Engines

Four-cylinder Ingenium diesels are offered in 132kW and 177kW variants, both generating 500Nm. These engines are joined by the new, highly-advanced four-cylinder Ingenium petrol engine which delivers 184kW and enables acceleration from 0-100km/h in just 6.7 seconds. An even more powerful, 221kW variant will join the Velar range in early 2018.

The V6 diesel combines 700Nm of torque for effortless acceleration and off-road capability with CO2 emissions of 167g/km. The 280kW supercharged V6 petrol engine combines exhilarating performance with a unique soundtrack and enables the Velar to reach 100km/h in only 5.7 seconds, before reaching an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h.

The Velar and Velar R-Dynamic core range comprises Standard, S, SE and HSE specifications. European customers can also specify Black and Luxury Exterior Packs.

The Velar will be produced at the company’s Solihull production facility, UK. Land Rover says full details and pricing will be released closer to its launch.

Velar really is the smoothest Range Rover ever

Land Rover has fully revealed its Range Rover Velar, which is a completely new member of the posh SUV family, slotting between the Evoque and Range Rover Sport.

Sharing its 2874mm wheelbase and much of its technology with the Jaguar F-Pace, this new Rangie will go head-to-head with the Porsche Macan in the premium mid-sized SUV market.

Yet whereas its Jaguar cousin relies on a more dramatic and muscular design to turn heads, the Velar instead opts for a comparatively clean and uncluttered look that Land Rover describes as “reductionist”. Not surprisingly, this is the most aerodynamic Land Rover ever created. Its developers even went as far as creating deployable door handles that fit flush with the body when not in use.

Indeed Jaguar Land Rover likes to tantalise its customers with such antics – even the original Jaguar XF had concealed air vents inside and although the Velar’s designers left the vents naked, its middle dashboard surfaces were styled to remain “secret until lit”.

Integrated seamlessly behind these surfaces are a pair of 25.4cm high-definition touch-screens that form part of the company’s brand new ‘Touch Pro Duo’ infotainment system.

The newcomer seats five in either leather or what the company refers to as the segment’s first “sustainable, premium textile seat material” and behind the occupants is a rather practical 632 litre boot.

With an aluminium-intensive body, adaptive damping on all models and air suspension standard on V6 versions, road manners should be top-notch, but the Velar should also hold its own off the beaten track if you tick the right options. Air suspended models will offer up to 251mm of ground clearance, while Land Rover’s second-generation Terrain Response system and All Terrain Progress Control, both optional, will take over when the going gets tough.

The Velar will be offered with up to six engine choices, kicking off with a trio of Ingenium four-cylinder turbo units offering 184kW in petrol form and 132kW or 177kW states of tune for diesel customers. Next up is a 220kW/700Nm V6 diesel for the best balance between performance and economy, but the top performer in the range is powered by a 280kW version of JLR’s supercharged 3-litre V6, allegedly capable of running from 0-100km/h in 5.7 seconds.

South African sales are expected to commence during the fourth quarter of this year, with local specs and pricing to be released closer to the time.

POS.

Why don't they get to work on a proper Defender replacement?

Looks great! That interior without buttons on the centre console is stunning. Won't it cannibalise high end Discovery sales though?

I want that 280kW Supercharged V6 Petrol!

I am in love with this thing, truly stunning work by Land Rover. I thought the Jaguar F-Pace was a beauty but this makes it look dated!

Nothing wrong with that, the sales and the money in the end goes to the same company.

I hate that Discovery Sport, I hope this kills that fugly thing off.

I can't wait till the center console goes into the other models, they've looked a bit outdated in that department.

Lumma reveals its take on the new Range Rover Velar

Lumma Design is one of the front-runners when it comes to customising Land Rover products, something that the British brand’s design chief clearly doesn’t appreciate. But the German tuner seemingly hasn’t taken notice, whipping the (virtual) covers off a wide body kit conceived for the recently revealed Velar.

Officially, this custom job is called the Lumma CLR GT Limited Edition and will help to mark the 30th anniversary of the design house.

Lumma Design says that it began work on this car shortly after the Velar’s official reveal in Geneva, and plans to continue fine-tuning until the end of 2017, when the finished product is revealed in the metal. Interestingly, it will initially be available as a limited edition model.

The redesign aims to give the Velar a more complete look by doing away with many of the production model’s crease lines, and also includes set of bold alloy wheels, a rear spoiler and some suitably intimidating tailpipes.

The standard Range Rover Velar will be in South Africa by the end of this year with four engine options, while a fifth 221 kW petrol derivative is scheduled to arrive in 2018.
