Range Rover Velar

Land Rover Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition

Designed as the pinnacle of the Velar line-up, the new model has been developed by Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations and is powered by a 550PS 5.0-litre V8 supercharged engine with a range of unique design enhancements. Adding to its exclusivity, this distinctive model will be available to purchase for one year only.

Rawdon Glover, Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover UK, said: "The Range Rover Velar strikes a perfect balance between go-anywhere practicality, dynamic performance and relaxing comfort. By enhancing the luxury and dynamic characteristics even further we have created the pinnicle of the Velar range."

With a supercharged V8 engine, the most powerful Velar accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds (0-60mph in 4.3 seconds) and is capable of 274km/h (170mph), while cosseting customers with traditional Range Rover refinement and comfort.

Uprated brakes and suspension components, plus bespoke settings for everything from the powertrain to the safety systems, ensure the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition mixes the personality of a performance car with the go-anywhere capability of a luxury mid-size SUV.

Michael van der Sande, Managing Director, Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, said: "Developing the Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition is the kind of task Special Vehicle Operations was made for. The challenge here was to increase performance without compromising the composure, capability and refinement inherent in Range Rover Velar."

The powerful new model is distinguished by a range of visual enhancements and unique trim finishes, delivering a more purposeful appearance and heightened attention to detail while maintaining Velar's perfect proportions and distinctive silhouette.

On the outside, the award-winning Velar features a new front bumper with larger air intakes to feed the V8 Supercharged engine and cool the uprated braking system. A new grille and lower side mouldings combine with a revised rear bumper featuring integrated quad exhaust finishers.

The exterior changes combine with a transmission tunnel undertray to ensure the fastest Velar in the range cuts through the air more efficiently.

Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition Gets Supercharged V8

Out of nowhere, Land Rover has revealed a highly-stylised SUV with a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 under the bonnet.

It is called the Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition which basically means it is a 550 hp (405 kW) Velar built by the Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations.

Autobiography means it is extremely luxurious and plushy while Dynamic means it is more Dynamic, obviously.

JLR’s familiar supercharged V8 engine sits up front which makes it the most powerful Velar on offer by far and can sprint to 100 km/h in just 4.5 seconds and go on to a top speed of 273 km/h.

Obviously the brakes needed some upgrading with all this extra grunt so there are now four-piston 395mm front and 396mm diameter rear brake discs that are lighter, more powerful and finished in bright red so everyone knows you have the range-topper.

The electronics and eight-speed gearbox have also been given a go-faster map, while the anti-roll bars have been uprated and the air suspension has been revised for a firmer, more sporting, ride.

Exterior enhancements include a new grille, fresh side mouldings, exclusive badging, an updated rear bumper and an active sports exhaust with quad tips.

There is also a redesigned front bumper with larger intakes which feed the supercharger and cool the bigger brakes.

An exclusive metallic blue paint finish is offered for the Velar SVAutobiography, and all models feature a black roof as standard.

Inside, the newcomer gets quilted leather upholstery, a sports steering wheel and unique knurled dials for the infotainment system, heater controls and gear selector.

It will be available in South Africa in the second half of the year with a base price of R1,714,000.

Land Rover launches 170mph Range Rover Velar SVA

Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic takes the fight to Porsche's Macan Turbo with a 542bhp 5.0-litre V8

Land Rover has pushed the performance envelope of the Range Rover Velar by shoehorning a 542bhp 5.0-litre supercharged V8 under the bonnet.

Unlike its identically powered Range Rover Sport sibling, however, the new eight-cylinder Velar doesn’t wear the SVR nameplate, with Land Rover instead choosing to borrow the SVAutobiography Dynamic badge from the full-size Range Rover.

Available to order now priced from £86,120, the Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic is capable of firing from 0-60mph in 4.3 seconds, and heading on to a top speed of 170mph. Despite the performance, Land Rover claims it offers “traditional Range Rover refinement and comfort” instead of the out-and-out thrills of the Sport SVR. A louder active exhaust still features, however, claimed to be 7.1kg lighter than the standard system.

The range-topping Velar also features uprated brakes (395mm front and 396mm rear) with four-piston, red-painted brake callipers, alongside firmer air chambers for the air suspension. Upgraded anti-roll bars combine with a revised variable damping system to ensure the handling matches the pace on offer.

Land Rover has also recalibrated the SVA’s steering, all-wheel drive, eight-speed transmission and active rear differential, claiming nearly 64,000 man hours of fine-tuning to the car’s control systems. A stronger transfer box has also been added to the all-wheel drive to ensure the driveline can withstand the V8’s 502lb ft of torque.

Alongside the new quad tailpipes, exterior revisions include enlarged air intakes, a new grille and reprofiled rear bumper, and lightweight 21 or 22-inch wheels. Bespoke badging and colour choices, all with a contrasting black roof, complete the look.

Inside there’s unique quilted leather in four colours, 20-way adjustable heated, cooled and massaging front seats, a sports steering wheel and aluminium shift paddles. Detail changes such as a knurled finish for the switchgear and rotary gear selector feature alongside bespoke graphics for the digital instrument display. Buyers can also specify a carbonfibre pack for the Velar SVA’s interior trim.

Range Rover Velar gets 405 kW V8 … and it’s coming to SA

Land Rover has dropped its 405 kW supercharged 5,0-litre V8 into the Range Rover Velar to create this, the new SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition. And the fresh flagship is scheduled to launch in South Africa in the second half of 2019, priced from R1 714 000.

Developed by Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, the new model will be sold by dealers for just a single year.

Thanks to its eight-cylinder engine (mated to all four corners via an eight-speed automatic transmission), the British firm says the Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition will hit 100 km/h from standstill in 4,5 seconds, before topping out at 274 km/h.

The new model will boast uprated brakes (with 395 mm discs up front and 396 mm items at the rear) and suspension components, plus what Land Rover describes as “bespoke settings for everything from the powertrain to the safety systems”.

So, how will you identify one out of the road? Well, the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition features a model-specific front bumper with larger air intakes and a new grille, while new lower side mouldings and a revised rear bumper design (now featuring integrated quad tailpipes) are also included.

The “Range Rover” lettering on the bonnet and tailgate, meanwhile, features a knurled finish. The SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition is also the only Velar available in a Satin Byron Blue metallic paint finish. Regardless of which of the six exterior colours are specified, a Narvik Black roof will ship standard.

Lightweight 21-inch alloys are also part of the package, while 22-inch items will be offered as an option. Red brake callipers featuring “Land Rover” lettering are furthermore included, with understated gloss-black items optionally available.

Inside, you’ll find twin-stitched, perforated and quilted Windsor leather (in a choice of four colours) unique to the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition along with 20-way adjustable heated and cooled front seats (with memory and massage functions).

The cabin also features a unique sports steering wheel with a “specially contoured rim” and aluminium gearshift paddles. The rotary gear selector and circular control dials for the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system all feature a knurled finish, a theme repeated (albeit it digitally) on the dials in the 12,3-inch instrument cluster.

Overfinch hands Range Rover Velar a fresh new look

The folks over at Overfinch has made a habit of creating interesting bespoke Land Rover products. The latest derivative from Jaguar Land Rover’s stable to receive the firm’s styling updates is the Range Rover Velar.

Like many of its offerings, the British tuner says this Velar features a “minimalist design for maximum impact”. Less is more, then. The company adds that each item can be specified individually to ensure customers have “greater freedom of choice”.

The components to choose from are Overfinch’s signature carbon-fibre grille (with black, bright or satin chrome detailing), an extended front splitter and what the Leeds-based firm describes as “front aperture surrounds”. At the rear, an updated diffuser (with branded exhaust tips) and spoiler can be fitted.

All parts, except for the aforementioned grille, can be specified in a “state-of-the-art” technical composite. This strong yet lightweight material, which is finished in gloss black, is exclusively available to the Velar. Carbon-fibre bits are on offer, too, but these cost considerably more.

The complete carbon-fibre body kit costs £16 454,40, which by our calculations is a whopping R300 700 premium on top of the price of a Velar (in R-Dynamic guise). For reference, the original car’s cost ranges from R979 283 to just below R1,4-million. Specify the full technical composite package (seen on the car featured here) and you’ll be expected to pay £12 855 (which translates to R234 880).

However, if power is what you require, Land Rover recently revealed its flagship Range Rover Velar, which employs a 405 kW 5,0-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine. The SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, as it is called, will be manufactured for only one year. Pricing for this model will start at R1 714 000.

LOOK: Thundering new Velar confirmed for SA

If the Range Rover Velar appeals to you, but you feel it’s missing a little bit of poke, you’ll be pleased to note that Jaguar Land Rover SA has confirmed that the new Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition is coming to South Africa.

Designed as the showstopper of the Velar line-up, the new model has been developed by Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations and is powered by a 405kW 5.0-litre V8 supercharged engine. Yummy.
With a range of unique design enhancements, adding to its exclusivity, this limited edition model will be available to purchase for one year only.
The Velar was named World Car Design of the Year at the 2018 World Car Awards and it is the second model in the Range Rover family to wear the coveted badge, after the introduction of the Range Rover SVAutobiography Dynamic in 2017.
That supercharged V8 lump under the bonnet propels the car from a standstill to 100km/* in 4.5 seconds (and on to a maximum velocity of 274km/* ).

If stopping power might be a concern, uprated brakes and suspension components, plus bespoke settings for everything from the powertrain to the safety systems, are said to ensure that the new SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition mixes the personality of a performance car with the go-anywhere capability you expect of the Range Rover nameplate.

To visually set you apart in the new model, you get a sportier front bumper with larger air intakes to feed the ‘charged’ engine and cool the uprated braking system. A new grille and lower side mouldings combine with a revised rear bumper featuring integrated quad exhaust finishers too.
Even the Range Rover lettering on the bonnet and tailgate has been enhanced, with a knurled finish on the metal element of the two-piece letters adding a fresh degree of sophistication to the exterior.
The vehicle is also the only Velar available in Satin Byron Blue (a metallic paint finish from Special Vehicle Operations’ Premium Palette range) and all models feature a contrasting Narvik Black roof as standard. Also, you get distinctive forged aluminium wheels, 21-inch in diameter, but weighing the same as the 20-inch wheels fitted to ‘normal’ Velars.
If you want to individualise the vehicle even further, 22-inch rims with a Silver Sparkle finish and a diamond-turned lip is available as an option. The larger wheels are said to support the performance focus of the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, helping to generate more grip and accommodating larger brakes. Its 395mm front and 396mm diameter rear brake discs feature a two-piece construction to optimise weight. The extra stopping power is highlighted by red brake calipers (four-piston at the front, sliding at the rear) which feature Land Rover lettering too.

On the inside, the beastly exterior is matched by a heightened sense of luxury with a carefully curated combination of trim finishes and upholstery, according to the manufacturer. Twin-stitched, perforated and quilted Windsor leather is unique to the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition, for instance, and adds to the sense of luxury inside.

Customers can choose from four interior colour combinations (Ebony, Cirrus, Vintage Tan and Pimento) and the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition features 20-way adjustable heated and cooled front seats with memory and massage functions as standard.

Other special touches include a unique sports steering wheel, which features a specially contoured rim and tactile aluminium gear shift paddles. Lower down, on the console, the rotary gear selector and circular control dials for the Touch Pro Duo infotainment system all feature a smart, knurled finish.

An optional carbon fibre pack for the interior adds a more contemporary feel to the cabin, with a distinctive steel weave, while sports pedals and illuminated metal scuffplates with Range Rover script complete the look.

Calibrations for the AWD system, Active Rear Locking Differential, eight-speed transmission, steering and air suspension have all been honed and are bespoke to the SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition; delivering a more focused driving experience.

According to JLR spokesmen, engineers at Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations spent 63 900 hours fine-tuning the calibration of the vehicle to optimise its ride, handling and responsiveness.
Despite all the cool stuff about this Velar, the coolest feature has to be its bespoke exhaust set-up, which provides a soundtrack to match its performance. The Variable Exhaust System features active-valve tech to optimise the exhaust note, depending upon the driving conditions, and it provides the Velar with an unmistakable V8 rumble, the manufacturer notes. The exhaust set-up is 7.1kg lighter than the standard design and its increased gas flow rate helps to unlock some of the flagship model’s increased performance.
The new Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition isn’t cheap, though, priced from R1 714 000. The first units will start to arrive in South Africa in the second half of 2019.

Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic 2019 review

Should I buy one?

In the press blurb, there’s a quote from Land Rover’s design director, Gerry McGovern, about his team’s focus being on “creating vehicles our customers will love for life”.

The Velar SVAD, which can sprint on motorways and crawl up rocky Spanish hillsides with the same elan, is just that kind of machine.

Meet Kahn Design's stealthy Range Rover Velar 'Pace Car'

British car modding outfit Kahn Design, the self-proclaimed “automotive fashion house” of the world, has revealed its stealthy-looking ‘Pace Car’ exterior upgrades for the Range Rover Velar.

Dressed in Satin Black livery, the modified Velar has been equipped with an array of carbon-fibre bits, including a revised front grille and an imposing front spoiler. A large roof-mounted wing and boot spoiler has been fitted out back, both of which are hewn from this light-weight material. Glance down the sides of the Velar ‘Pace Car’ and you’ll notice the wheel arches, now housing the firm’s 23-inch RS Pace Car alloys, have been extended. The suspension has been lowered, too.

The interior has been upholstered by its in-house team of craftsmen, the tuner says. The perforated Herringbone leather seats are hand-quilted. Bronze buttons, featuring Kahn Design’s mantra - “the road is my catwalk”, are fitted to each pew. Other bespoke items include a handcrafted steering wheel and aluminium pedals.

Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography lands in SA with 405kW V8

Land Rover’s mid-sized Range Rover Velar has always been more regal than racy, but that changes with the launch of the new SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition flagship model in South Africa.

That’s a really long name, but even longer is its brag sheet. But apart from the unique styling package and cabin features, the big news here is that it inherits the 5-litre supercharged V8 petrol engine from its larger siblings. Good for 405kW and 680Nm, the SVAutobiography will hurtle you from 0-100km/h in just 4.5 seconds, according to Land Rover, and on to a top speed of 274km/h.

But there’s far more than just a heart transplant going on here - engineers at Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations performance division have worked their magic on the air suspension, all-wheel-drive system, Active Rear Locking Differential, eight-speed automatic gearbox, exhaust and steering.

With all that fury, the SVAutobiography is in no mood to blend in with the rest of the Velar family, and so it’s set apart by a unique styling package that includes a redesigned bumper with larger air intakes, new grille and revised rear bumper, which incorporates quad exhaust finishers.

Filling its wheel arches are a set of 21-inch alloy wheels, although customers can also opt for 22” rims featuring either a dark grey or ‘silver sparkle’ finish, the latter also featuring diamond-turned edging. The edition is also available with an exclusive colour called Satin Byron Blue, but if that’s not up your alley, Land Rover also offers five other options in the form of Firenze Red, Santorini Black, Eiger Grey, Fuji White and Indus Silver.

There is a certain degree of exclusivity promised here too, as the Velar SVAutobiography Dynamic Edition will only be available for one year.

It’s currently priced at R1 743 325.

Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography (2019) Launch Review

Verdict

At R1 743 325, the Range Rover is pricey, but less so than a Porsche Cayenne Turbo, mind you. However, BMW is about to flood the market with X5/X6 50i models, but thanks to a limited run of just 1 year, the SVAutobiogrpahy promises an element of exclusivity above and beyond the badge.

This head-turner of a Velar is not as discreet as other Range Rovers – this is the one you buy to be seen in. And, with those bite-the-back-of-your- hand looks and a goosebump-inducing soundtrack, you won't only be seen when you pull into the train station... you most certainly will be heard too.
