Range Rover Velar

Range Rover Velar Updated, Orders Open for 2023

The stylish Range Rover Velar has received an update and South African buyers can place orders with vehicle delivery expected in the middle of 2023.

Following on from the updates the Velar received last year, the suave SUV has now received yet another round of enhancements, most of which are to be found in the cabin.

What’s changed?

Exterior changes include a new grille design, complemented with ultra-slim Pixel LED headlights with the Daytime Running Lights exuding a jewel-like appearance. At the rear a new lower bumper and new LED taillights with a 3-D design. Two new exterior colours will also be offered including Metallic Varesine Blue and Premium Metallic Zadar Grey.

Moving inside, the Velar gains a new 11.4-inch single floating curved glass touchscreen which is integrated into the centre console. Buyers will be able to choose between 4 new leather colours including Cloud, Caraway, Raven Blue and Deep Garnet. For those who prefer leather-free upholstery, the Velar can also be had with a wool and polyurethane textile combination upholstery from Danish textile experts, Kvadrat.

For music lovers, an optional Meridian 3D Surround Sound System with 17 speakers and 750 W amplifier will be available.

Next generation Range Rover Velar will be electric

Porsche won’t be happy about this news, its long-delayed electric Macan is about to get yet another competitor in the market by the time it goes on sale. First, it was the Lotus Type 134 - to be unveiled next year with sales to start in 2025, and now Range Rover is joining with a completely new Velar.

New Range Rover Velar will be the first of a new lineup of battery-powered SUVs from JLR and will go into production in late 2024. The current version of Velar is not having the best time - it is the second slowest-selling JLR vehicle, with nearly 30,000 units sold in the last 12 months - only slightly better than the Discovery.

Velar will join Discovery Sport and Evoque in their new, electric chapters of life. Those three vehicles will be manufactured at the revamped Halewood facility in Merseyside, good old England. The current Velar shares its platform with Jaguar F-Pace, and both cars are built at the same factory in Solihull.

The new, all-electric Velar will be based on a brand-new EMA platform. When the EMA architecture was first unveiled in 2021, it was intended to support hybrid powertrains, with the all-electric systems seen as secondary. This has changed now, and the three new SUVs, including the Velar, will be battery-powered only.

Land Rover Velar review

WHAT'S THE VERDICT?

“The Velar majors on style but it’s still a useful car. It’s roomy enough for a family and not so big it’s awkward in cities”

For the driver, the Velar is about relaxed security rather than engagement. Let it lower your heartbeat and enjoy the panoramic view of the scenery. And the new range of engines have futureproofed it a little longer.
The newly installed display/control system is mostly good to use and striking to look at. Just be careful with your interior trim choices.

The Velar majors on style but it’s still a useful car. It’s roomy enough for a family, not so big it’s awkward in cities, and capable of unusual off-road and towing feats.
Where rivals from Mercedes, Audi and BMW just look and feel like taller versions of their saloons, a Range Rover is still a distinctive thing.

DRIVEN: 2024 Range Rover Velar is perfectly balanced in all the right places

The switchover between battery and engine is seamless and the turbo-charged 2.0-litre isn’t shy to move it along swiftly, not in a head-jerking way, but just enough to know that it can do the business and doesn’t mind working hard using slick gear changes.

The noise cancelling feature and decent insulation keeps things very civilised inside so there’s no need to raise your voice during conversations or turn up the volume.

The Range Rover Velar Dynamic HSE P400e is a quality package that isn’t cheap at R2,195,400 but it’s certainly worth a closer look if you’re in that market and you’ll definitely make a statement when you stop outside the Mount Nelson Hotel or a five star Sandton Restaurant.
