Please indulge me this waffle!

Why is it that some helpdesk bots always insist on treating me like a complete brainless moron ?

Why is it that some heldesk bots always never LISTEN to what I am saying, but rather gallop off on a completely pointless tack ?

Why is it that some helpdesk bots can never put me in contact with a manager or someone who may perhaps help?

AAAARRRRGGGhhhh.

Today, Cybersmart goes down. It does this. Every month. Round about this time, EVERY month, Cybersmart goes down. I reset the router and retry... no go... phone the helpdesk, ask to have them reset the port, and within 2 minutes all well and happy in bandwidth land for another month, give or take some downtime.

This is a given. The sun will rise and Cybersmart will go down around this time each month. The sun will set and a port reset will sort out my problem.

BUT, noooooo, not today... today I am put through hoops. Today I am told that it is because Telkom International is down that I cannot get online. I point out that even local is not working and, before I can finish, I again am told that this is due to Telkom being down.

*I sigh*

I then point out that my neighbour is having no problems. I am then told that because I reset the router I have corrupted it and need to reconfigure. I ask him to reset the port his end. He says no. I ask him to please reset the port his end. He says no, and to just do what he is going to instruct me to do. I sigh. I bite my lip. My knuckles turn white.

I begin to do what he instructs me to do. This he tells me in the most patronising tone he can muster.

"Click on the little bar at the top of internet explorer and erase what is there. Here you need to type the address. This address is where the browser will take you. You need to go to the default gateway. Get a piece of paper and a pen, you will need to write this down carefully...OK"

FFS

I use Opera. I have SOME understanding of copy and paste. Does it matter what ipconfig yields? I KNOW the dns of my router. I have it bookmarked. How hard is it to memorise 192.168.1.1? Why must I fight with him about my router's password? I changed it the day I set up the bl00dy thing!

Reboot the modem, he says. Reset my port I say. No, he says. I click through the hoops. All the settings are already exactly what he wants them to be. Reset the port I say. No, he says, it is not going to make a difference. You need to press the little button on the back of the router... and follow my instructions. NO, I say, let me speak to Laurie. Hold on he says. Dead line and 3 minutes later I phone back.

New bot answers. reset my port I say. Ok he says. Username he asks for. Done. Voila. Magically all online again. I ask to speak to manager. Very politely he tells me to rather email them as they are all busy dealing with a Telkom problem.

Ok I say.

*sigh*

I type this and

*sigh*

Thankfully, I've had few reasons to call the helpdesk, but when I do, I find it quickest and easiest to just humour them and let them work through whatever script they have in front of them.

Haha... too true... but I draw the line at a factory default hard reset of both routers just because he felt like it... when I KNOW that all it takes is a port reset on their end.

2 Minutes to reset my port and reboot the router.

20 Minutes to reset both routers to factory defaults and then reconfigure everything again from scratch including all MAC devices only to find that it still does not work, and THEN try a port reset.

Ummm... I'll take the 2 minute route first thank you...
