Bloemfontein - A young student has been left traumatised after she was raped five times by hijackers who attacked her and a friend in Bloemfontein.
The hijackers assaulted her 22-year-old male friend and left him for dead before chasing away with the 18-year-old woman in the bakkie last Thursday night, reported Volksblad.
She was raped five times in two different places. Her ordeal finally came to an end after police officers saw her in the vehicle with the hijackers and became suspicious.
The cops chased after the hijackers and shots were fired. The bakkie drove into a fence and the hijackers jumped out and ran away.
Police saved her life
The young University of the Free State student said the police officers had saved her life.
She is suffering from nightmares and is receiving counselling following the attack.
Her friend remains in hospital and has had an operation on his hand. He also has injuries from being assaulted with a hammer on his head and body.
"I am just so grateful he is still alive,” the unnamed student said.
A Free State police spokesperson said the hijackers and rapists are still at large.
The University of the Free State expressed shock at the incident and said it was offering support to the student.
"We remain deeply concerned about the safety of students who don't live on campus. The student council is already working with several partners, including the police, on the possibility of setting up a network of guards in suburbs where students live," UFS spokesperson Lacea Loader said.
