RapidShare Issues

i split the account between 3 friends so it comes out dirt cheap.

I do the same with 3 friends since with the bandwidth restrictions we have in this country one shared account is more than ample, and I get it in the 3 month packet which works out even cheaper than month 2 month.
On top of that as you probably know with the points you can earn you get extra time which then extends the package for a free extra month or more.

One wonders though for how long can services such as RS sustain. The content creators have them firmly in their sights, and I'm sure you'll be seeing more of ...

This file has been deleted.
Reason: THIS FILE IS FORBIDDEN TO BE SHARED! Complaints received.

I can bet you now that over 90% of the forums/blogs that I use, use rapidshare.com files. Now why wouldn't I want to use RS?

I'm not sure what you mean, is there some reason that you would want to use RS over other services just because everyone else uses it?

I know that almost everyone uses RS, but why not use another service that is far better for everyone?

You would be surprised if you knew how fast the uploaders re-upload their goods once RS has deleted them. They simply won't be able to keep up. ;)

1] I think it's been explained in the previous posts in this thread as to why we use RS.

2] If you mean far better for everyone because they don't want to pay for having a download service like RS then can you imagine the chaos with those unstable freebee sites which at best come no where near the quality service that RS offers it's customers.
I and many others prefer to pay a few bucks and get a reliable service.

As I already said we can go round and round in circles but the bottom line is RS rocks for premium members.

Thats because some uploaders do not encrypt and password the contents of their uploads properly.
In the circle I belong to we do it properly and not one of our files over the past few years has ever been deleted by RS or has been labeled with the dreaded "THIS FILE IS FORBIDDEN TO BE SHARED!" at worst some were deleted by the uploaders after all in the circle had downloaded the files.

Uploading files using the actual name of the program or whatever it contains is looking for that dreaded "FORBIDDEN" message.

They are probably not after closed group sharing but rather the publically accessible links on forums/blogs used by the masses. After all, in a closed group someone still has to source the content by public means first.

Understood but its going to come down to a war of effort attrition. If the content creators step up their 'content assasination' efforts to the point where they're taking out links faster than the community is prepared to re-upload them, then they will diminish the value of the system.
Thread closed? ;)
Dicussing it here aint gonna make an iota of diff ... this situation is a little bigger than this forum.

In my case a "closed" group of just under 150 people worldwide who re upload new RS links on other sites for the general public (the original links are never posted for the general public), these are the links that could and do get the "dreaded" message if whatever was uploaded is "hot" enough, there is more to it as far as the source goes but I'm not going to say anymore about that part.

I tend to agree with that. The worst is when there are places which offer different links for different things, you get DepositFiles which is just as PREMIUM as RS, then you get MegaUpload which is also free with Spyware
or Premium or free with a problematic captcha I can't get past on iBurst.
File.com (spelt differently) is Totally free and very fast with resumes.
Zshare looks nice too. So for some files you need a Depositfiles acc, a RS acc and even a MegaUpload acc. Sendfile and Mediafire are other alternative
fast services too.

The problem with some people criticising others over using a 'freebie' service is that the same people are ironically downloading tons of copyrightable material they should have bought on CD/DVD instead. I mostly download fansubs myself and usually get them from 4-5 excellent http sites which
offer FREE downloads without any captchas or payments. If there is a series I like I BUY IT WHEN IT COMES OUT ON DVD. So yeah maybe I'm cheap regarding RS, but I spend a lot of moolah on content each month on DVD from online shops.

Cry me a river,

It's not aimed at anyone, I thought it would fit the thread ;) :D :p

While they likely wouldn't shape HTTP (port 80) itself they could possibly restrict/throttle speeds from specific addresses that they notice users HEAVILY download from, and if they knew the rapidshare's server addresses then it shouldn't be all that hard to implement....they're also the only ISP I'd expect to stoop to such things.

Buuuuuuuuttttt personally I'm finding speeds bad on loads of sites lately, is it JUST rapidshare for you?

It might be the ~60Knot winds knocking things around if you're a cape town user. Speeds got better this afternoon when the wind died down. If we lived in america we'd have wooden houses ... or .. we would have /had/ wooden houses before the winds.

I've still been able to download from my house and my gf's place happily at full 120Kbps!
