Durban - An 8-year-old girl has been bitten, had an eye gouged out and been raped, in Gingindlovu, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Wednesday.

Her attacker dragged her into a sugarcane field next to her home, where her grandmother was waiting for her to get back from school on Monday, police spokesperson Captain Thulane Zwane said.

"The 8-year-old victim could barely walk, but managed to drag herself into the yard in front of her house before collapsing. She was dressed in her school uniform and was dishevelled and dirty."

The girl was taken to a clinic, and from there to a hospital.

"He gouged her left eye out of the socket, and tried but failed with the right eye, which was left swollen shut. She was bleeding profusely from both eyes," said Zwane.

"The suspect also bit her in the neck, raped her and left her lying helplessly on the ground."

There was also an attempt to strangle her.

A 15-year-old boy was arrested and expected to appear soon in court in Gingindlovu.

Police were investigating whether he was involved in an attack involving a Grade 6 pupil earlier in the day.

Gingindlovu is about 60km southeast of Richard's Bay.

Yeah, i got to say that must be the worst thing i've read all year. Hopefully they nail the 15 year old. If you are old enough to rape you are old enough to do the time.

We are a nation of monsters!!! This is the second time someone's had their eyes gouged out in KZN, the first was that boy over a cellphone.
 
How the heck do kids even think of some of this sh*t? I know we're going to end up saying the usual things - blame the parents, poor people shouldn't breed etc. But there appears to be something fundamentally wrong with a substantial portion of our population. They're just fscked in their heads, there's no other way to put it.

Words cannot express my disgust - have long been a proponent for bringing back the death penalty - every single one of these types of articles I read reinforces that view.

...and dammit, on the political scale I'm a Democrat not a Republican but THIS is just inhumane

What rights has he got (human rights) ? considering what he has done, does the definition of human being still apply to him ?

I say give him big doses of Oestrogen and let him go eff himself.

Just a question to the gung ho on here. If we had the death penalty do you think it would make more or less sense to leave people alive behind ? As a gory illustration of my point if the killer had any sense he would gouge out both eyes and leave no means to identify him. Its not like he is displaying any compassion by only goughing out one.

How many more armed robberies would end in death etc ? I think this is the reason why the death penalty has never been shown to be an effective deterant againt crime. From a practical perspective we must consider avoiding future crimes over blood lust and vengeance because they could well actually make things worse.

By the same token we could also say increasing the minimum mandatory sentence for certain crimes would have the same effect. Interesting point though.
