Hi guys

I had the pleasure of building a budget/mainstream pc for someone.

I would like to know though what you guys think of this setup.

Total Costs was 6900

Intel Core i5-4430 CPU R2,349.00

ASRock B85 Pro4 Motherboard R1,149.00

Thermaltake Litepower 650W Black Ed. R699.00

Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB DDR3-1600 Blue Kit (2x4GB) CL9 R950

Sapphire Radeon HD 7790 1GB Dual-X OC R1,729.00

Do you guys think it will deliver great value for money?

Edited to add prices

R6900 excluding an HDD?

Personally, I think it is average. You could do alot better i.e an Asrock motherboard is not great.

Without the prices on the individual components, I can't say much.

What I can say though is that the PSU is way overkill. A decent 400W PSU would've done the trick. Other than that it looks OK.

Also, what hard drive and case did you pick?

Lastly, what will it be used for?

Intel Core i5-4430 CPU - Decent CPU

ASRock B85 Pro4 Motherboard - I would go for Gigabyte or Asus

Thermaltake Litepower 650W Black Ed. - A 450w would do, and its cheap. Around R350.

Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB DDR3-1600 Blue Kit (2x4GB) CL9 - Why 2x4gb? And not one 8gb? I understand the concept of dual channel, but I would rather have an open slot to add on.

Sapphire Radeon HD 7790 1GB Dual-X OC - Cant' comment, my knowledge of GPU's isn't that great.

Regarding the PSU, the 650W thermaltake only has a 70% efficiency rating, so it needs be bigger if the person chooses to get another 7790. Higher efficiency rating psu's costs a lot more. Well the ones I saw . . .

Regarding the HDD, it is just a normal 7200rpm seagate drive. Due to money restrictions the person can only get a faster hdd or SSD at a later point.

PC will be used for gaming. Hopefully BF4 when it releases.

PS: the 7790 preformance better than a 650TI and is R600 cheaper ;). Great little card imo

.

The ASRock B85 Pro4 Motherboard has 4 DIMM slots at least ;)

I may be wrong but an efficiency of 70% means it will be pulling 928W from the wall but will still deliver 650W.

mmmm I thought efficiency meant that under load it will only be able to deliver 455W

GreyBush is right about the efficiency issue. Efficiency refers to how much more power it would draw from the socket compared to the power drawn by the components. Typically they give the efficiency as the best efficiency that the PSU can give.

So for instance if the efficiency is 70% for a 100W PSU and your components draw 100W from the PSU, then your PSU would draw at least 142W from the wall socket (100 / 70% = 142.8)

As for the HD7790, it is an excellent choice, depending on the brand and price that you paid for it.

There is nothing wrong with that ASRock motherboard either. It is also a great choice.

Ah . .

Thank you for helping me right then. Seems like I misunderstood efficiency ratings on PSU's.

At least now know ^^

Is that a budget machine? i5 with 8GB RAM?

Well . . .got all the parts today.

was assembled power on . .everything was fine, had to shut down and when I powered it on again . . .BANG!

I think a capacitor blew in the PSU as there was a loud bang and spark that came from it with a smell . .

So guys . . .please tell me that there is good chance that all the other parts are ok? pleasee??

I'm scared out of my mind that it fried the whole pc.

Often when the PSU goes, it takes the motherboard with it.
In my mind it says that the OVP (Over-voltage protection) should prevent the PSU from damaging other components when it goes.

I don't quite know what other PSU to recommend from Titan-Ice's website. For the R700 price range, I would've recommended the XFX Pro Series 550W, but its not sold by Titan-Ice.
What I think is the best one for that price range that Titan-Ice offers, is the Antec NEO ECO 450W PSU. Its pretty difficult to find reviews for these entry level PSU's.

Yea, the bang you heard was most likely the PSU. Have a look around the PC to make sure that nothing else popped. But you'll definately know if a PSU popped, just from the smokey smell from it.
After you replaced the PSU, double check that everything has been correctly seated and in place - especially the RAM.

lol @ crap PSU. It is actually comical. You would think that manufacturers stop with crappy components like non solid caps on motherboards but noooooooooo they want to give us ***.

Not only capacitor would do loud bang. Probably bang is related to blowing fuse... and... anything can blow the fuse: output rectifiers input chopper transistors - just examples. :)

Eish... built a PC for someone else and the PSU popped, that is unfortunate.

I know, and to make things worse, it was built for someone very close to me. She almost cried when I told her the news :(

But my friend is taking it in to the shop that supplied all the parts, it is confirmed that the psu is dead. Will keep you guys updated.

I doubt it's your fault so they should replace.. it's pretty difficult to connect things the wrong way on a PC, you'd have to force the connectors in.

Update time..

Seems like luckily just the PSU blew. Nothing else seems to be damaged.:D
