I have being growing Trays of wheatgrass in a covered rack and I reckon 4 out of every 5 Trays have been destroyed by beach rats.(I know they are rats because I've seen them at night scurrying away and the terrier goes batshiit)
I then moved the trays indoors in the space between the front door and the slam lock (which is about the size of a UK telephone booth) and I boarded up all access points and placed smooth slippery varnished tabletops against the slamlock interior which is slightly higher than the Tray holders. There are no holes to enter from outside the slamlock into the space just before the front door where I have set up my tray holders, topped by a mesh net just for good measure in case a sparrow or something got through the X gaps in the slamlock.
The past 4 weeks have been bliss. Not a single tray has been trampled to resemble Godzilla making an s turn through a cornfield like in the past. I've had 4 weeks of uninterrupted harvests every 7 days.
Until this morning.
A newly sprouted tray of wheatgrass was trampled and crushed during a feed.
How did the little F&^*rs get back in?
What can I do?
I assume they figured out eventually how to climb the slamlock above the wooden block and jump down onto the trays. I saw one rat climb up a broomstick the other evening as if they were practicing for an assault on my wheatgrass.
How do I kill the lot of them?
Do I need Rentokil? or should I just go and get some razor wire and affix this to the top and bottom of the slam lock trellidor- assuming the rats are climbing it.- to prevent and deter?
Do I get a whole load of rat sized mousetraps and lay them from their suspected nest all the way to the trays?
I am cautious of poison because the terrier will eat pellets but the traps could take the terrier by the snout too.
Any ideas?
