Rattray murderer pleads guilty.

Hope he doesn't get a lesser sentence for pleading guilty. SA really needs a sentencing option where life means life.

"When we armed ourselves to rob him I foresaw the possibility that someone might be killed and reconciled myself to that possibility."

 That's it, I'm getting a gun if that's the general train of thought before a robbery.

And where is the trigger-man I ask? If they don't cough up his name they should get life.

In his confession, Nkwanyana said that two days before the murder one Sibonele Mpanza told him that Rattray owed him (Mpanza) money.

"He told me to go with him to rob Rattray.
So they wanted a bit of revenge, hence the killing. This is murder and nothing less.

I would like to know how we went from:

Legendary tourism personality and Anglo-Zulu War expert David Rattray's killer entered his house and fired a single shot before being ordered to re-enter the building to fire another two rounds, according to a source close to the scene.

Sapa heard on Saturday morning that the leader of the gang had ordered the killer to go back inside Rattray's home, close to his Fugitive's Drift Lodge, near Dundee, after the first shot was fired.

Only one of the gang had entered Rattray's home while the others, including the man who appeared to be the leader, stayed outside.

To:

The indictment says that Rattray, 48, and his wife Nicky were in their bedroom and when Nicky saw the gunman she screamed. Rattray pushed her out of the way and advanced upon the gunman who fired three shots, hitting him in the chest, arm and hand.

Rattray died at the scene of "haemorrhagic shock due to a gunshot wound in the left chest". When Nkwanyana was arrested on January 31 he was found in possession of the Norinco pistol.

and:

The Witness website reported that according to a close family friend saying he had learnt from Rattray's wife, Nicky, right after the incident, that the couple had been in their bedroom, with Rattray changing to go cycling, just before 6 pm when they had heard their domestic worker screaming.

and:

"The workers told us that the money was with Rattray. We drove the workers to the building where he was.

"Banozi and a woman who worked for Rattray went into the building while the rest of us remained outside.

"I heard the woman calling Rattray, and he apparently went to them. I was not with Banozi at this point. I heard shots.

"Shortly thereafter Banozi came out and said that he had shot Rattray. We ran away.

Then we have:

The second man was due to appear in the Pietermaritzburg High Court later on Friday, although police were not revealing any details.

It is believed that the man will plead guilty to the murder or turn state witness.

In the Dundee Magistrate's Court the unnamed man appeared in court with a light grey blanket over him.

The case was postponed for seven days to allow police time to investigate further and hold an identification parade.
-
The accused was whisked away in a car under his blanket by members of the police's Organised Crime Unit.

Perhaps my overly suspicious mind, but it stinks. Why the Organised Crime Unit? Don't we have Murder & Robbery anymore? How does one sequence of events differ so markedly from another?

Notably they pick these guys up in a couple of days but have no clue on the Petersen murder:

An elite police unit investigating the murder of theatre and music personality Taliep Petersen is doing its best to crack the case, say police.

Stinks.

@kilo39 - it could be a case of South African journalistic licence.

Even the Organised Crime Unit rings a bell. Why them? (And I don't believe their plea for secrecy.)

 Errrr.........., mmm rings a bell no doubt "organised crime unit" from what i understand the police, sap and metro seem well organised as it is at crime, and have been so for a while. ...... some bordering on thuggery, the East Rand comes to mind.

I also thought the same thing, the first story was very distinct, doubt a journalist could make up those details. The initial version also gives the impression of a motivation other than robbery, why would they want to hide this now?

One good reason is to find a fall guy quickly (a patsy) to minimise the effect on the international tourist industry. Two: Organised Crime Unit says it was part of some kind of organised crime (farm murders, anti-white vendetta?) Police departments are usually very distinct, not interfering on others turf: therefore why no Murder and Robbery investigation?

There's definitely something very strange going on. The way the killer was apparently "ordered back to finish the job" definitely implies he was targeted for some reason. The coverup is almost more scary than the crime itself, what are they so desperate to hide? Its not playing out very well overseas either:

Read the last sentence of that article to see what the rest of the world thinks of SA now.

*One good reason is to find a fall guy quickly* ja that is Exactly what I thought....
