Hi guys,

I'm looking for software that can handle RAW images off a digital camera (Pentax K100/110D probably) and does good quality conversion.

The software shipped on the pre-K10D Pentax models apparently don't have the greatest conversion quality, and the included PC/Mac software uses the same engine and thus produces the same results.

I'm getting my dad, who was a pro photographer long ago, a camera. Pentax because his kit is all Pentax and they've done a sterling job of keeping things compatible - just so he can get into it again. So I need some software for him to start out with. I'm not ready to spend the cash on Lightroom/Photoshop and I'm not ready to hand over my Mac Mini either just yet :)

Any suggestions?

Flip! I need to look at Picasa again! I'm sure I didn't see RAW support when I initially looked at it (pretty much the day it launched).

Dad already has that and is familiar with it - so that shouldn't pose any problems.

WKJ?:beanie: thanks - I'll have a look at that too. Not sure if Picasa can do batch processing, if it doesn't this might just be a good addition. What's the quality like?

Thanks!

Give him the mini and let him use iPhoto. :D There are also plenty of really good and inexpensive image editors available too. :D

How does Aperture 1.0/1.1 perform on the PPC mini? I has Radeon with dedicated video ram after all. I can pick up a secondhand copy (still shrink wrapped) for ÂŁ80

Personally unless he's a heavy photographer I'd suggest sticking with iPhoto.

Also 1.1 is pretty long in the tooth.

In that case I'll have to upgrade the Mini to Leopard - no use trying to support an OS over the phone if I cannot see it in front of me.

Their VNC implementation is typically Apple - form and function - esp the tie in with iChat.
