Good day,

Girlfriend has DSTV,TV and DVD player.

DSTV has 3 RCA.
TV has 2 RCA in and 2 out.
DVD has 3 RCA.

I bought a converter that has 1 output RCAs and 3 RCAs input.
DVD player had AUX option aswell.
Now my question is,how do I setup the converter so that the 5.1 sound plays with picture on the AUX of the DVD player and DSTV and when I switch to DVD/CD.

She also has 3.5mm jack to RCA that she also wants to use through the AUX with the 5.1 sound to play her music through her Blackberry.

I've tried mixing the RCA diffrently but can't get everything to play correctly and was thinking of getting RCA splitter cabble for the yellow RCA and red and white RCA to get everything playing and showing picture.

Your help will be appreciated please.

you cant get 5.1 from the standard RCA RCA is stereo hence the red and white (Right and left)
What you need to see if the dvd has a SPDIF (some times called coaxial) input (I know most of the recent DSTV has that - the orange one) if you have the HD decoders the hdmi port can also transmit in digital audio

Is your DVD player just a DVD player or is it a home theatre system ?
Where are you going to play the 5.1 sound from, your tv ? Or ?

I gather from your post that you actually mean a DVD Home Theatre System with an additional 2 x Red/White Audio inputs for an additional sound source - in this case - the converter you will be using.

Here is how you solve this issue if your TV set does not have 3 x RCA inputs (VIDEO + STEREO audio) - but only 2 x RCA inputs (VIDEO & MONO Audio.)

1. Plug the VIDEO Output of your DVD player into the 'INPUT 1' RCA socket of the converter - use ONLY the Yellow VIDEO RCA cable & socket.

2. Plug the VIDEO Output of the DSTV Decoder into the 'INPUT 2' RCA socket of the converter - use ONLY the Yellow VIDEO RCA cable & socket.

3. Plug the AUDIO Output of the DSTV Decoder into the 'INPUT 2' RCA sockets of the converter - use ONLY the White (L) & Red (R) AUDIO RCA cables & sockets.

4. Plug the Audio OUTPUT of the converter into the AUX IN RCA sockets of the DVD Home Theatre System - use ONLY the White (L) & Red (R) AUDIO RCA cables & sockets.

5. Plug the Video OUTPUT of the converter into the AV INPUT RCA socket of the TV set - - use ONLY the Yellow VIDEO RCA cable & socket.

Now when you want to watch a DVD, simply select the AV INPUT source of the TV, and select INPUT 1 on the converter.

When you want to watch DSTV with 5.1 surround sound, select AV INPUT source of the TV, then select INPUT 2 on the converter, and then select AUX on the DVD Home Theatre system and adjust the volume as required.

You may need to select the DOLBY ProLogic / DOLBY ProLogic II Movie / DOLBY ProLogic II Music setting on the DVD Home Theatre system to get the full surround sound effect - depending on the content on DSTV.

Also ensure that the DSTV decoder is set to STEREO Audio and that the language setting is set to 1. English Original & 2. English Family, then check the Surround Sound settings and select 'Manual' (refer to your DSTV menu settings for details on how to select this.)

Hopefully this will allow you to get the maximum audio benefit with your equipment.

PS - simply plug the 3.5mm to 2 x RCA cable into the INPUT 3 socket of the converter - then select AUX on the DVD Home Theatre system - to play the music from the BlackBerry or any other mobile audio device.
