Ok, I'm not gonna act noobish and immediately ask for an invite. I've been registered here for over a year, browse the mybb site and forum almost everyday (especially the PC Hardware forums and the Tech news on the main site page), but I rather keep quiet and not post since I don't have much good to say. Now seeing as I have will need to gain the trust of those that are able to invite, I'm gonna be a lil more pro active here.

The reason I need an invite is because I'm with SAOL, and sadly I cannot use my 50Gb local bw cos they don't have access to IS or SAIX news servers as far as I know (to use on newshost and grabit with my newshost account). So for the past 3 months that bw is just going to waste.

My options are:

- Drop SAOL and register with another ISP, or
- find a way to use that bandwidth!

I don't want to drop SAOL as yet as I've been monitoring the ISP offerings recently and I'm sure that there's gonna be some really good offerings coming up. The last time I switched ISP's, Telkom sent me a bill for over R1500, and it took 6 months to rectify that!! I don't have the time to deal with something like that now.

My aim is to upgrade my line from 384kbps to 4Mb, and make use of that 50Gb bandwidth, which acoording to SAOL support will cost me R559 for line rental, 3Gb international and 50Gb local bandwidth. I know about peering and leeching, I intend to do both extensively!

But before I ask for invites, I would like to know:

- Besides Bitfarm and Greenlab (is greenlab still in existence?), are there many other torrent sites or even just normal http sites to download from? (recommendations for sites that don't need an invite will be appreciated)
- How good are the local torrent sites (in terms of content)?
- How reliable are they (in terms of connection speeds etc.)?
- Are there any sites that require payment (I don't mind paying a minimal fee for good content on a reliable site)?

I think that's enough for now, but I would appreciate answers to my questions. Thanks...

edit: post # 7 for me and counting....

+1, bitfarm should implement something so that if you invite some one who just leeches and never seeds you should be responsible for them as well

bitfarm already has that, if the person who invited you is responsible for everything you do...so if you just hitting and running then your inviter gets a warning aswel

most local sites that are on offer are all are invite basis, the content is relatively new such as t.v series which are the major shows that air in the states, the connection speed varies from the server load if it's filled with just people leaching the connection speed is slow

lol. SAOL fail! My mate is in a similar situation and torrents are the only solution

Are you thinking about getting a contract? It sounds very contract-y but I haven't checked it out. As you said, the market is volatile so a contract isn't a good idea.
Anyway, I reckon you should find a way to use the bandwidth.

- Besides Bitfarm and Greenlab (is greenlab still in existence?), are there many other torrent sites or even just normal http sites to download from? (recommendations for sites that don't need an invite will be appreciated)

There was an open torrent site by the name of zee.za.net but it got shut down. It may still go back up but nothing yet.

- How good are the local torrent sites (in terms of content)?

Quite good for new stuff. If you want something older, you can put in a request and it might be filled.

- How reliable are they (in terms of connection speeds etc.)?

Popular stuff is pretty fast and you can ask for a reseed if there are no seeders on a torrent. This increases reliability.

- Are there any sites that require payment (I don't mind paying a minimal fee for good content on a reliable site)?

Not that I know of in SA.

You sound like a pretty sincere guy and I reckon you will get an invite soon. Just remember to follow the rules and try to keep a good ratio (which is harder than it sounds!)
