lol. SAOL fail! My mate is in a similar situation and torrents are the only solution

Are you thinking about getting a contract? It sounds very contract-y but I haven't checked it out. As you said, the market is volatile so a contract isn't a good idea.
Anyway, I reckon you should find a way to use the bandwidth.

There was an open torrent site by the name of zee.za.net but it got shut down. It may still go back up but nothing yet.

Quite good for new stuff. If you want something older, you can put in a request and it might be filled.

Popular stuff is pretty fast and you can ask for a reseed if there are no seeders on a torrent. This increases reliability.

Not that I know of in SA.

You sound like a pretty sincere guy and I reckon you will get an invite soon. Just remember to follow the rules and try to keep a good ratio (which is harder than it sounds!)

Thanks for the answers.

I'm not thinking of getting into a contract with ANY ISP any time soon! ADSL market is too volatile for that!! I'm just reluctant to move away from SAOL because of the grief I had when I cancelled my account with Telkom!

Waiting for Digichilli to get their act together and go live with their accounts, then I'll sign up for the unlimited option. But I will still keep my account with SAOL for now. Once I get the Digichilli account I want to signup for 1 of those lifetime memberships with an int. NZB site, but I will still have 50Gb local bw from SAOL, so will still want to use local torrent sites.

About keeping the seeding and peering ratio, I'm sure it will be easier once I upgrade to a 4Mbps line, since the upload speed on a 384 line is only 128kbps, whilst it's 256kbps? on a 4mbps line.

It's not so much about your line. You have to actively monitor your ratio. When I first joined, I downloaded a lot thinking my ratio would take care of itself- it doesn't.

There is an open torrent site, zee.za.net. The server's up but the domain name is still propagating. It could be a week or two before we can access it.

I hope you get an invite soon. Good luck!

Thanks for the advise, yeah, I've heard (read on this forum) about zee.za.net, hopefully they sort their hosting problems out!!

So you say I have to monitor uploads as well? Interesting, I always thought it takes care of itself as well!!

Interestingly, seems the noobies have given up on asking for invites LOL, hope it stays that way...

Yeah, I suppose it depends on what you download. In the beginning, I downloaded old stuff and asked for reseeds all the time. By the time I got the file, there were absolutely NO leechers in sight. I seeded for 24 hours and my ratio climbed to an impressive 0.0-0.1 on those particular torrents.

You have to watch what you download. I never download something that I won't have a chance of getting my ratio to at least 0.5. I also download new stuff as it comes out. The thing is, I only have a 384 line so even if I start first, the 4meg guys come later and finish before me. Luckily some things are popular enough for me to get positive ratios.

It does max out at 640 as far as I know. Just do a search on google. THere are posters on this forum with 640kbps upload speeds

Ok cool. Well, I'm moving over to the SAOL uncapped, so won't need the local torrents I guess, but if I did get an account, I should still be able to connect to local torrents right?
