The local torrent sites have a posted policy on their site that any user who gives an invite to someone "in response to a request on another forum" will be banned.

The reason for this is, they only want people inviting their known friends who they know will be good seeders. There are too many people signing up to local torrent sites and then abusing the service (leeching).

If you really do want to get an invite you should stick around here any make friends and get involved in the community here. If you prove yourself to be a faithful user of the resources offered here, then you will probably get an invite sooner or later.

Coming on here with a post count of less than a hundred and being a n00b is not going to get you an invite, so don't waste your time or ours.

unfortunately they have to protect their own bandwidth.

Say for example, Joe N00b gets on the forum here and asks for an invite. He promptly is given one (so we can try him out). He logs on to the local Torrent site, sets his BitTorrent Client to the minimum upload speed, and procceds to download 30 Gigs (the amount his Telkom Local Account allows him). He then logs off and never goes back to the Torrent site that month. Next month he is back here again with a new username and asking for another invite.

he can keep raping the other faithful users of the Torrent site for 30 Gigs or more a month, simply because nobody knows who the hell he is, and because the Torrent site is willing to hand out invites to any and all.

Does that make it a little bit clearer? Hopefully you will see, handing out invites to all and sundry is not a wise policy on the surface of it. Better to invite those who have proved they can be responsible members of a community.

Please people, don't even think of asking for an invite unless you can show that you are a dedicated member of some internet community, this one or elsewhere. In other words... you are not likely to considered for an invite unless your post count is anywhere over 100, preferably more. You better have a very very good reason for why we should invite you if you just joined this board.

if you want you can send me your e-mail address, BUT also send some info about yourself, ISP? Broadband? Who are you and why should I invite you. etc. And it better be a darn good reason.

It makes a lot of sense this way... I thought it was a bit harsh at first as well... but after being dropped in mid-download by a few n00bs... and seeing others abusing their download ratio it makes sense. It is simply just not possible to run a community where the majority of users are clueless leechers who are there to get all they can and do not intend to contribute a single thing. It would not work to monitor them since his IP address would have changed by the same time next month.

The demonoid model is similar, but they have a huge userbase. Local torrent sites have less than a hundred active hardcore seeders. It severely restricts your ability to be more open. Demonoid does not have to worry about limiting themselves to a select group, since they are accessible from anywhere. Local sites on the other hand only have a limited number of users to draw from... and the state of bandwidth in South Africa makes the average South African broadband user very stingy with sharing. It's not his fault... it is Telkom's fault. but there it is.

Sure, this might be strict, but we are not a-holes about it. There is a reason for the strictness. Bandwidth costs us money and we don't want people using our bandwidth and not sharing. The fraternity is among those who are committed to sharing heavily. Some of us have very high share ratios and we are very proud of it. It is nice to belong to a community like that.

And there is great stuff there to share. I'm not gonna list it all here for obvious reasons, but the truth is I can't even get time to download everything I want. I just don't have the bandwidth or hard drive space. I dunno which Torrent community you guys have belonged to in the past, but the one I am a member of is very cool!

The whole idea is to get to know people better. If they have a higher post count (in a shorter space of time), then we know they are actively participating here... and will be more of a valuable asset to the site. If their post count is higher here... then they have most likely made friends and it is easier for me to ask people if they know this guy.

So yes, we don't just indiscriminately invite anyone. We ARE only interested in those who will actually SHARE... not leech. We have all had our fair share of leechers, and they are actually on a clean-up drive at the moment to get rid of all the leechers.

We want people who will seed the files they download... for at least 24 hours. You can't just log on and grab something and then log off when it is done... you will be punished for doing that and will eventually be kicked. That is not our fault.... it is your fault.

I have had my fair share of problems with people not seeding stuff... uploading stuff... and my download gets halfway and then they disappear, etc. We like to screen them first.. rather than have them log on and waste our bandwidth. I say screen them BEFORE they get on there. If they are persistent enough and determined to become a contributing member they will eventually get invited. But these one post wonders, rarely stay around. I don't see any reason to give them a trial-membership and have my name dragged through the mud when they prove to be leechers.

So from the SA Torrent Sites thread, I followed BitFarm's scent, and winded up here. Okay now, guys just how many users does BitFarm have? I will only be joining for one thing, and one thing only, but I won't post it here lest some douch makes unwanted accusations against me.

Now considering that the myBB community is mostly interested in A -> Y, while a few members are interested in Z, the only way I'd be able to download Z is if there are many members of BitFarm sharing Z, and the higher the total number of users on BitFarm, the greater the possibility that there'd be more users sharing Z.

So can someone post or PM me the average number of users online at BitFarm at any moment in time? I don't plan on even considering to join until I've been on this forum for at least 3 months, and contributed 500 posts or more, so please no dirty PM's telling me to choke on gravel.

Does anyone know what coding Bitfarm uses? I want to test with a copy site like theirs :)

Classified, else you would setup your own ;) and there's already too many random sites trying to survive as it is, don't need yet another one.
