I was wondering if it isn't possible to reprogram a sentech modem to enable it to connect to other wireless services (after subscription of course). A 3G modem is a 3G modem or am i mistaken?

or do providers apply other discriminating tactics such as blocking modems that haven't been purchased from them (which much surely violate some competition rules (although in this country...))

Sentech modems will only work on their proprietary "IPWireless" supplied base stations.

Whilst Sentech loves to use the word "3G" their equipment is proprietary 3G.

This is not new in the wireless industry!
WiMax is suffering from the same side-effects of these types of proprietary issues too:
The chairman of the WiMAX Forum's technical working group has related this to the selection
of a plugfest lab and getting it equipped (a lab in Spain is doing the WiMax interoperability testing).
WiMAX is many times more complicated than 802.11, but not as complicated as 3G.
