Is it possible to reactivate an old sim that wasnt used for a few months? I dont need the number back, just want to avoid going to buy a new sim and having to RICA another sim.

It IS technically possible... by just giving the number on the SIM to the people at the Vodacom shop.
Or maybe you can get @Ockie to do it for you.
But they're going to ask you to put the request on a letterhead.
But to be honest, it's just so flipping easy to activate a new one, they're just gonna be highly suspicious of you....

I was expecting a simple process like activating a new SIM. Doing all that is more effort than buying a new sim. Ill just go buy one when Im going to the store

EDIT: The last time I tried to buy a sim at the store, there was a system issue. They didnt want to let me buy the sim and let me do the self help option. I had to come back another day. I was hoping it was possible to activate this sim I already have as if it was new sim off the shelf

Yes. Set in grave for 3 days. On third day remember to roll away the stone.

Our system does not allow for a old sim to be activated again. Perhaps IT can do it. But the systems we have access to don't. Easiest is to just RICA a new SIM. If you happy with getting a new number.
Thanks for the reply Ockie!

you can re-activate the sim at the shop, however they will charge you a reconnecting fee.

On contract yes but this sounds like prepaid. Number might be recycled. Not sure how long this sim has been inactive for.

I think I last used it in March. I didnt need the number back. I just dont like the RICA process.

What happens to the RICA status of this SIM that I currently have? Is that SIM still registered to me even though it is dead now?

It is the number that is Rica. Once number gets recycled then Rica is deleted also.

TIL something new.

When you buy a sim theres no number on packaging and you get an sms telling you the number after it is activated. How does the store RICA the number like that? Or is the cell number linked to that 20+ digit number on the back?

I always assumed they RICA that long number to your name and the cell number is linked to long number

what happens if number got deleted from system or that is what a vodacom store agent told me, my backup vodacom prepaid sim number was just deleted around march, any chance of getting the number back? vodacom store said even a new sim with sim swap wont work?

What number are you using currently

The vodacom sim was in a spare phone. My wife and I are both on MTN. Sometimes during extended load shedding the MTN towers go down and Vodacom stays up. It was just a back up in case of emergency etc.

I neglected loading airtime on the voda sim for a few months since the MTN towers didn't go down in the last few rounds of shedding.

It should be pretty quick at Pep Cell. Just take ID with.
I'm going to the mall tomorrow. Ill stop by there. Thanks

@Ockie I bought a new prepaid sim. I'm trying to RICA it myself at home (didn't have my PoA when I was passing the store)

I downloaded the app, selected rica new sim. Entered the 20 digit number. I then get this error.

Is that option not available anymore? Or is this an issue with the rica system?
