This you would know if you do as advised. SMART tests don't give reliable results, so you don't really know.

Also, do you have good anti virus software installed?

I've managed to copy all the data over to another drive, so I'm not worried about data loss. Now it's just to figure out whether I can get the drive working again with a simple format, or other app, or if I need to replace it.

Once a HDD is going wonky, best is to replace it, as the wonkiness will get worse with time.

You'll open yourself to a lot of troubles should you insist on using a wonky HDD... ;)

Not true. It can go worse, but some malfunctions are in results of powers surges or minor mechanical shocks, these will be self-healed by over-writing entire surface and subsequent scan for delays will reveal a true condition.

If it can't be healed by above simple maintenance steps, there is a dropbox for such devices in Knoppieslaaghte near Diepsloot (JHB). I use such devices after re-running manufacturing certification tests. I must say, they never failed to me. :)
