Rear-view mirrors set to disappear

These need to be fitted to all new trucks. These vehicles seem to have as many blind spots as they do observable areas. Cars with modern styling are getting almost as bad.

Luckily we won't have this "feature" in SA, as all equipment that is sold as standard gets removed before they bring the cars to SA (except for luxury cars). Why don't they make important safety features standard instead of wasting a few thousand bucks on cameras and screens to replace a piece of mirror?

A mirror is simple, reliable, cheap and doesn't even need power... some things just work.

This is awesome!!

no no no.

that would be a dangerous feature.
fuse fails? electrical fault in wiring?

Then you are fscked.

my car's interior mirror has a light sensor, and auto dims. It would require a new fuse. But if that fuse breaks I can still use the mirror, at night the oncoming lights will be a bit bright, but the mirror will still work!

Mirrors, fixed to the ceiling or dashboard, or outside on the door or front wing, have continued little changed into the digital age

But,

Today’s rear-view mirrors are full of technical wizardry.

Otherwise very interesting. I am all for removing the most exposed bits from cars.

I cannot remember when last I had a failed fuse on a car and mine is seven years old already. Modern car electronics are very robust. There are many more critical systems that rely on electronics.

Mr. Loaf will have to modernise:

Objects in the rear view [-]mirror[/-] camera may appear closer than they are.

On the plus side - it does improve the aerodynamic flow of the car and therefore improves its fuel consumption. And it also significantly decreases the car's footprint.

On the negative side - one more thing that can fail, or get hacked.

Imagine driving in traffic and all of a sudden your rear-view system starts showing ads for a chain of Budget Plastic Surgery Clinics in Lagos. And you later realize your car was infected with mall-ware from your e-cigarette.

there are many cars older than 20 on our roads. So maybe your car is safe from fuse failure now, it does not mean it won't happen in 10 years....

Most modern cars cannot function without electronic systems. These include engine management, traction/stability control and ABS. They are reliable and comparatively cheap. In a few years you will have to start cycling again if you do not want to rely on electronics.

Nooo! :D

Should be incorporated into a HUD as well as fixed screens on the instrument console. The idea of taking your eyes off the direction you're headed at great speed to look behind you is very daft.

I have lost count of the number of times, I have been stopped at a red traffic light and looking in my rear view mirror, I see yet another piece of useless waste oxygen, bearing down on the back of my vehicle, because they are engrossed in the cell phone they have stuck in their face.
No worries, I can gauge their speed and either I roll a bit forward, or I get the hell out of there if I am able. I have avoided a hellofa lot of accidents like this. Rear view mirrors work.
