Recarpeting a car

There is an auto upholstery place in Roslyn PTA (sorry can't remember the name) that sells universal car carpets. You buy the big piece, wet it thoroughly and put it in the car. While it is wet you can shape it to the floor of the car. Cut it to shape. When it dries it goes hard. Bags of sand work very good to shape the floor.

Here is a good guide too...

Great these pics will be very helpful!

Awesome finally found some nice carpet made for car interiors today, only going to be able to do it Sunday though, will let all know how it went.

Ok so i just finished, advice for anyone wishing to do this, take it to a professional - its way more work than you think, however i think it came out great, pics to follow.

How i did it:

1.) Removed front seats - 4 bolts, 2 in front, 2 in back, slide the chair forward and backward to access them easier.
2.) Removed rear seat, on the hyundai it was 2 clips in the front and 2 bolts behind, accessed through the boot.
3.) Remove centre console, 3 screws, one on either side and one on the back.
4.) Remove side covers, unscrew and lift off.
5.) Remove clips in various places.
6.) Remove carpet by pulling over gear lever and handbrake, the fold in half to fit out door.
7.) Vacuum and clean interior.
8.) I cut out the origional carpet and underpad of the footwells to give the legroom some more cushion, used contact adhesive to put them in place.
9) I decided to split the carpet into 2 joining under the front seats, i then cutout the sizing roughly based on the old carpet for each.
10.) I started with the back, put the carpet in, centered and glued in the middle using contact adhesive. (note - the spray on adhesive is ****, rahter buy a tub and paintbrush to apply.)
11.) working my way out i pushed the carpet into position making vertical cuts on the edges for overlaps.
12.) replaced back side covers to hold carpet in place.
13.) going over the back seat i used PLENTY contact adhesive to shape the carpet and get it into place.
14.) I then started with the front, I used the old carpet as a template and cut out the centre console hole and dash footings.
15.) Using the same procedure as with the back i glued in the middle and worked my way out, replacing the side covers to hold the carpet in place.
16.) Some contact adhesive under the dash to make sure the carpet stays in place.
17.) using a small screw driver i found the holes for the front seats and cut around them using a stanley knife.
18.) Everything back in, seats, centre console etc.
19.) drink time!

Net week i will get to the boot as i have enough carpet left so will be nice to match it all up.
