Hello,

looking for a router that supports 1/2 bridge to replace my Mega 100WR supplied by telkom...
just to clarify, if i buy a router that supports half bridge all i do is set it to 1/2 (if its not already) and then enter one account in the modem and then dial the other from my pc?

if thats right, can someone reccomend me one that they like/ know works well/ good quality for money/ have used before etc... and maybe where i could buy it? but just a name would be fine.

thanks!

I am pretty certain that the router you have is a Telkom re-branded Billion (Billion 5102G I think) router, you can re-flash it to the latest Billion BIOS and it will meet your half-bridge requirements.
Google Telkom and Re-Branded.

Billion supports it, even in their cheapest models. Called PPPoE pass-through.

On my Billion (cheapest model I could find) it's just called Bridge Mode actually. It's the BiPac 5200s. Really most routers will be perfect as long as they support bridge mode.

The Mega 100WR2 supports half-bridge mode, but I'm not sure about the 100WR. Here's how half-bridge mode is done with the 100WR2: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/84795-How-to-Telkom-Mega100wr2-half-bridge

And of course you can do traffic splitting on the 100WR2 too :D http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...Local-Traffic-Splitting?p=1063548#post1063548

I would stay away from Billion routers, unless your SNR margin is very high and your line attenuation is very low.
Netgear, TP-Link, Linksys/Cisco or D-Link are the routers you want to go for.

Netgear DGN 2000 - perfect for home and small-office use. Comes with 802.11N (up to 300mbps wireless) and 4 port switch, and you can re-flash it with firmware from DGTeam. Supports half-bridge mode (aka PPPoE Relay).

Currently running it at home and hve also set it up for several smaller clients, and recommend it to friends and family. Very stable and reliable. Works very well.

do i have to have a 802.11N wireless card? what if i dont?

if you don't have a Wireless 802.11N card, then the router will fall back to 802.11b/g which will give you 54Mbps instead of the 300Mbps of 802.11N.

I second DGN2000.

Good feature set, supports PPPOE Relay, can be customized with DGTeams firmware which unlocks a ton of extra goodies and from my experience is an excellent router for connections with low SNR to ensure a stable connection.

thanks guys, i guess im gonna go with the 2000 but i got a few questions...

on pricecheck.co.za i get these results...

Netgear - DGN2000
Netgear - DGN2000-100ISS
Netgear - DGN2000-100UKS
Netgear - DGN2000-100PES

which of these is the right one? are there any performance differences?

II stand corrected, but I believe they're all the same, with slightly different firmware for different regions, to comply with different regulations related to wireless equipment.

If you buy one from a RSA retailer/etailer, it would have be ICASA type approved, which means you don't have to worry.

PC International have it for R967 incl. VAT:

DGN2000-100PES
300MBPs Smart MIMO Wireless Modem Router w/4-Port 10/100 switch and single WAN, built-in ADSL 2+ modem. Wireless Speeds up to 300Mbps
R 849 excl. R 967 incl.

They are based in Randburg, JHB
