Hi all

Have anyone recently traded in a older iPhone at iStore and what was your experience, did you get the amount you expected, especially with a battery under 75 or 80%?

I have a iPhone XR 64 GB which I want to trade in, it has been covered and screen protected all its life and all buttons, cameras etc. are still working as it should, the website say I can expect to get R2300 for it, maybe even R3000.
The battery capacity is on 74% though and it says the battery is significantly degraded.

The last iPhone I wanted to trade in 5 or so years back was a 7 I think and I was expecting to get something like R2500 for it. I made the appointment and they did there tests, it past everything with flying colours and the tech even mentioned in what great condition the phone is in, but then it failed the battery capacity test. Because of this they then offered me R80 for it, yes EIGHTY, down from R2500.

I actually put up a fight with them because nowhere at the time did they mention anything about battery life being coupled to trade in value, only that the device should still switch on and take a charge. Eventually after escalating the matter they just told me it is what it is, so I told them to keep their R80 and I sold the phone privately for R1500.

I'm now wondering if I should bother to go through the same shlep of trying to trade in the XR, only to be told on the day, sorry, battery is shot, we'll give you peanuts.

I see on the website they mention they can come fetch the phone, but I imagine the courier cost will be for my account and if I don't accept the trade in amount, I will have to pay again to have it couriered back to me.

When I traded in my old iPhone last year, it was still in mint condition and working perfectly, so I almost got the exact amount their estimated value on the website indicated - they deducted R1200 from it because the battery health was 79%. If it was 80%, I would have received the full amount.

I recently traded in my iPhone 11 and the offer dropped significantly. as the battery was below 80%. This is definitely taken into account now, so your XR could sell for much less than the online estimate. You might want to sell it privately. You'll get a better price that way more quickly.

the istore website offered me R14 for my 4s 8gb last year, but i haven’t had a chance to go to a shop to see what the assessment says.

we checked trade in instore for SO's 11 Pro 64gb and even though it passed all tests and battery was above 80, we were disappointed with the offer. trying to remember the amount
