so need to get a car for someone.
i was thinking of either a new toyota or used mercedes - and odd pair, but i believe a toyota is every bit as reliable as a mercedes, and cheaper to maintain.
the mercedes on the other hand, has comfort and safety on its side.

i'm looking to spend about R250k.
some models in any manufacturers range are better than other, some are flat out lemons.
the car will be a daily commute vehicle for mother + 2 kids.

i'm rather partial to this a-class - but are they any good ?

but also this c-class

or the cla

the big question really is which models to go for, and which to avoid ?

For Merc I would go for this one with the motor plan.

C200

Personally I would go for this one. It's not a Merc but you can extend the Freeway plan for another 5 years and/or 300k km's so no worries about anything mechanical.

Audi A3 Sedan

I would go for something like this B class bit bigger than a but still small and nippy.
Wife has one and hopefully when she gets another car I will get it.

so now what, i've had bmw x 7, mercedes x 2, jaguar, range rover x2, audi x 1, alfa x 1

I've seen the current generation prefacelift c class for under R300k on auto trader. I'd look at one of those. Really nice looking cars.

If I could afford the merc maintanance I wouldn't compromise by buying a Toyota.

Current gen you really need get the AMG package and lights package(think it comes with AMG package), the poverty spec with halogen lights is basically a toyota :P

I saw one that looked nicely specced, didn't have amg pack though. My lowly vw sedan has the r line pack on, if I could buy again I'd choose a model without it. The bigger tyres are expensive and the non r line one I test drove long after buying mine had way superior ride quality. Doesn't look nearly as good though without the sport pack.

Can Manufacturer finally offer sport pack with out the hard suspension?

It's the bigger tyres that ruins the ride. I think on the fancy germans you get adaptive suspension options which might solve the ride quality issue.
