If you use Canon then the camera should have come with DPP which isn't bad.

Have a look at http://rawtherapee.com/ and http://lightzoneproject.org/ Both opensource. I use both from time to time on Win 7 Pro & D7100 NEF files. No issues so far. Both have more options to play with than Nikon's ViewNX2. Should work with any RAW images.
