Recommend a vehicle for overlanding

The newer the car, the more electronics, the more that will eventually go wrong. Also depends where you are going to go adventuring, but generally Toyota's are the easiest and most supported where one would typically go over landing (ie the bush).
An older Toyota Land Cruiser is never a bad bet, and not many mods are needed.
Alternatively, a good jeep wrangler can make for a fun 'weekend adventure' car if you aren't going into the depths of Africa, as they really aren't well supported outside of ZA in my experience...

I like the Land Cruiser a lot especially for its bulletproof engine but I'm not sure if it will work that well for a day-to-day vehicle. I could go for a 200, but those are a wee bit outside my budget unless I settle for a pre-2010 model with 200k+ clicks on the clock.

Best would be Land Cruiser but expensive and for a reason.
Otherwise a Toyota D/C but I would definitely not get a Fortuner.

How do you guys rate the VW Amarok? I see they are using them in the series of "Voetspore" I'm watching atm.

If you stay within the borders of SA it will be fine. You cannot be guaranteed to get low sulphur diesel outside our borders though.

A land cruiser with 200k miles is as good as new. Or get an Fj. Prados are a bit boring and underpowered .

nice matt black rims
snorkel kit
small lift kit done properly

People have lots to say about them,i love my Discovery 4 ,if you do preventative maintenance , they last, and not tooo bad on fuel considering the size of them,

I didn't really consider the FJ until @FiestaST mentioned it but the Isuzu was on my radar from the start. Not the mu-X, mind you, but the double cabs.
Your mods for the FJ are pretty well thought out, btw. I'd just add a bush or brush bar to make it look a little better from the front, never mind the collision and scratch protection.

Only one kid, so space should be ok as long as I can fit at least a 40L fridge in the back (which I can, according to Google).

Issue with Fj is petrol engine, when over landing you need to have decent range and usually diesel engines are better for that (bar dune driving).
Also take note that it is not only fridge but extra water and petrol tank., dual battery system, gas bottle, sometimes 6th tire.
In my mind I do not see Fj as overland vehicle, simply there is not enough space.
As I said I prefer station wagon type vehicles, so if not landy I would go for Pajero 3.2 disel.

Also you might end up in the middle of nowhere
