Looking for something not too expensive to increase WiFi transfer rates.
What I have connected is

Huawei B315
GL-AR150 - Running Gargoyle(for bandwidth management)
D-Link 8 port Desktop Switch
Synology DS918+ - As a NAS as well as VM running Pi-Hole
Cat5e cables

When I throw it all together, LAN transfers average about 60-70mbps to transfer network files which is acceptable to me.Perhaps it should go faster with cat6 cables (might still bottle neck with the Gargolye router) but that's not really high up on the to-do list.

My problem is that WiFi transfers go through the AR150, and that averages 3-6mbps.
I'm looking to increase this with an AP connected directly to the switch and let that handle wifi transfers.
The question is, do you guys have any recommendations for this?

Having just started the process of replacing my mikrotik router/firewall/AP with a Ubiquti USG + AC LITE APs ... what heaven. Relatively easy to setup so far (did both last night in fact) and throughput is great replaced my - Love the stats that it gives you - Gonna finish up the setup this long weekend

I don't think upgrading your network cable would make much of a difference since both Cat5e and Cat6 support Gigabit ethernet speeds, i.e. 1000Mbps. The B315 and NAS both support Gigabit ethernet so it would make sense to connect all your gigabit capable devices to the fastest switch you own, be it the B315 or perhaps the 8 port desktop switch.

Rather save money towards a wireless AC access point (e.g. Unifi AC Lite, +-R1500) which has much higher data throughput over short distances. You could always setup your existing access point in another area of the house to improve wifi signal range.

Get one (or two) of these, or one of their higher end units:

I have an AC Lite, paired with a Mikrotik router. Pure bliss.

The POE unit that comes with allows you to place it in the best possible location.

Youre basically going to get a boat load of Ubiquiti fanboys posting here, because the AP's are just that good.

Having just replaced my mikrotik routers (hap AC lites) with a USG, and AC lite aps, I will say they are the bees knees.
