Recommend me a backup solution

I'm busy googling, but would like some recommendations from the community who have had some experience with backups on linux.

Currently running latest ubuntu and looking for something where I can back up specific apps and their related data. Not sure it will be possible, but putting it out there to see what you propeller heads can come up with.

Will update my findings from my own investigation in here as well.

Giving back in time a go. Backing up to my local dropbox folder, so it syncs to the cloud. Will see how it goes.
