I'm new to the whole NZB arena.

I've got openelec with sabnzbd. So now I need to choose a news server.

Preferably one where I can pay once off or yearly. I don't like the inconvenience of having to pay monthly.

Oh and I'm a cheapskate! :p

Personally I use Usenet.net (my referral link),never had any issues with their service
Unlimited Access
Unlimited Speed
1748 Days Binary Retention
3628 Days Text Retention
24-hour Customer Support

XSUsenet has some good pricing on their packages, they are relatively new with a bit lower retention but their packages do allow multiple hosts at a set speed limit,so it's a tradeoff

I'd set up a yearly account combined with 2 or so block accounts from other providers as backups when your main fails to complete a file.

My setup:

Main - Astraweb
25GB Blocks - TheCubenet
- BlockNews
- Newsdeamon

So when part of a file is missing on your main server it'll be grabbed from one of your backups.

tweaknews.eu is the best imo for the price you pay, R45 p/m or so for 10mb connection

I'm with Newsdemon.com

Haven't had any issues with them.
Some older files around 600 - 800 days had issues with being out of retention, but other than that, you get unlimited data and unlimited speed, 50 concurrent connections with SSL servers.

tweaknews if they don't reject your creditcard like mine.
usenet4u.nl do paypal payments, more expensive though, uses tweaknews as an upstream, and is super fast
nextgennews you pay in Rands, and they have the highest article hit rate I have seen so far, uses multiple upstreams including tweaknews, though not as fast as tweaknews or usenet4u

Either way, get block accounts if you have to pay once, then use your ISPs news server as the primary server.

You've brought up something interesting here. I'm with TelkomInternet and I believe saix is their news server (???).

How do I get the details to enter into the sabdnzbd?

go with nextgennews for the block a/c. dude called savage over at mybb runs the show

Ok, so as a noob to the news server thing.... let me see if i got this right:

  • Ill go to sabdnzbd.org and download the windows installer.
    • then i will put in these details (news.saix.net, port 119, 3 -5 connections i think) not sure where they going to go, but i will have to figure that out when i get home(leave user name and pssword blank by the way
      • then i will go to http://newztown.co.za/ and say download 1 of the series there.
        • and then, the files done downloading i somehow add the file to the application?

Is this correct? i cannot try it out right now, as i am not at home to try this out.

        • Close enough to correct. You download a .nzb file from newztown for sabnzbd like you would download a .torrent for utorrent. The only difference is, sabnzbd uses a web interface in your browser where utorrent has a window.

So if i wanna use .nzb and newztown, what app do i download for those files, and by the details tha i need to get from my ISP, what details do i put in there? do i really have to fone Telkom and get that details?
