I'm interested in getting some feedback on running an ADSL modem from a Linux box. The distribution I'm going to use is Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 (unstable) with the latest 2.6.x kernel. I don't need any router or firewall functions on the ADSL modem.

Which is better, an Ethernet or USB ADSL modem?
Which make/models are known to be problematic?
Which make/models are known to work well?
Are some ADSL modems faster in processing than others? ie. inherently latent
What is the most affordable ADSL modem that works well?

Ethernet

Linksys
Billion
D-Link
Netgear

I'd say the Linksys WAG54G

Hi EricsON,

If your looking for value for your $, I propose you take a look at some of Billion's routers. The 5102S is a neat little unit, it's a 1-port eth modem/router and quite robust. You can check out the specs here

rgds.

I've been told that the Billion range of ADSL modems and routers aren't very stable when it comes to keeping a connection up.

Thanks for your feedback though.

Hi EricsON,

I've been told that the Billion range of ADSL modems and routers aren't very stable when it comes to keeping a connection up.

We have not had feedback from the market that the Billions are dropping their connections at all. May I propose that these people who are telling you things, e-mail us at [email protected]?

Kind regards,
Billion-Tech

If you just want a modem, the Dlink dsl-300t is your best bet for linux - pinnalce micro sells them for R300.

1 BILLION maybe sold 99.999.999 to go :-)

Definitly have a look at BILLION or NETGEAR (slight price & look's difference) but with any of these brands you can't go wrong if you are up to do the right installation that actually is quite easy. Let me assure you that Billion that we sell here at www.soholink.co.za as well as Netgear are a very reliable and stable.
