Please could I get some recommendations (Preferably from past experience) for a Netbook/Notebook for R4k to R5.5k max.

I am looking for a bit of multitasking, a decent screen, 2GB RAM, at least 160GB HDD and the rest can vary. I don't mind buying someone's Netbook or Notebook 2nd hand either.

Basically what I will be doing on the Netbook/Notebook is: Java/C++/Python programming, Word doc writing, web browsing, music, movies, AutoDesk AutoCAD 2010 Occasionally (Just to view 3D models to aide my drawings) and would like a bit of multitasking.

Sold a few Samsung R519s recently. Those are some really good value notebooks....

+1, not sure how long they will last though.

Yeah, will be interesting to see those units in 3-4 years time. Dell and HP wear very well; I've seen Mecer laptops that look like crap after 2 years....

I am currently looking at an ASUS EEE 1201N atm. Please give your input

If you can afford R5000 or a bit more, then try to get a Core 2 Duo or CULV. Do not get anything with Intel Atom, it's much slower.

Something like the Dell 11V or Acer Timeline.

Check this Anandtech article: Intel Core 2 CULV Roundup: Who Needs Atom?

Where can I get myself one of these blighters? It looks like a good investment.

(The ASUS EEE 1201N goes for approx R5600 so that's about my limit. I will register with another supplier if I can to get it at cost - A friend might want to buy one from me if they're good)

I would love to have that XPS, just don't have the money right this minute. Also worried slightly about buying 2nd hand as there is no warranty as it is from the states. Would I be able to buy a warranty from a company somewhere in CPT or is it impossible for one to buy a warranty for a 2nd hand laptop?

+1 on the try to get a core 2 duo etc, the price range for that starts about 6k, so unless you spending less than 4k you might kick yourself unless you already have a notebook or/and size + weight + mobility is needed in particular.

My mind has been changed completely by a nice surprise in my bank account :)

My budget is now R10k and I'm looking at a Dell Vostro 1750 or a HP. HP Pavilion dv6-1320ei Notebook VT918EA

HERE is the Dell Vostro 1750

HERE is the HP

I am also looking for good prices for a good deal. I need integrated graphics (ATi/nVidia) and I would obviously also like the laptop to look nice too

I think the HP, personally... Just because i've heard that Dell has crap support! It looks like the HP has a better graphics card so will help with the AutoCAD, but the screen is smaller... it also has faster RAM, but the processor has less L2 cache.... BUT I still the the HP is better :)

EDIT: Also see that the Dell has a 3year warranty compared to the HP's 1year, that kinda sucks

You will always get these things with Notebooks. Dell is more supportive in South Africa of late but I like the HP look. I might raise the bar slightly to get a HP with a more beefy Graphics processor though

THIS Mecer would be my ultimate choice for the price. It right up my alley except for the fact that it's Mecer which means a dull look on the outside.
