recommendation for dev in cape town

We recently built a system, it cost us 230K. So yes, you're gonna pay more ;) Bearing in mind it also depends on your time frames, if you want something in two/three weeks. Yes definitely. Your scenario im estimating around 80K (roughly)

thank you for the estimation, helps us with things. You might be a PHP hater but you have been helpful ;)

:D

R 30k :-O

You're definitely gonna have to fork out way more if you're looking for a quality solution. This is based on my limited knowledge of your requirements. I'm sure you have other requirements that would add to the cost. You could get a junior dev that would take many months if that is the budget...

Please do not go codeigniter as its decrease in popularity and short comings mean that it would be difficult to maintain 5 years down the line. Think long term.

Edit: I tend to agree that php is not the best language out there since it makes people sad. HOWEVER, it is a good solution if you need a large base of developers AND want your application to be based around open source technologies. Python and Ruby are awesome but it is more difficult to find devs. If you're willing to look for "gems" (pun intended), then use Ruby or Python. Personally, I'd say go C# ASP.Net :P

Just something you asked earlier, and then gave your cost estimate:
Bootstrap framework (not a UI). Many people started using it because it is so easy to use and quick to build. Me included (with LESS) on smaller jobs. But the problem with Bootstrap is that people get into a groove and all Bootstrap layouts start to look the same. So before somebody offer you a cheap quick site layout solution, first check there previous work and compare it with other themes made with Bootstrap.

"The trick with Bootstrap design is not to make it look like Bootstrap"

I understand and hear exactly what you are saying. We are looking for this "twitter look" if that makes sense. I have done some searching to really get an idea of that sites look like when they are built around a Bootstrap framework. They definitely have the same look and feel to them, from what I can see.

Something that I am a bit confused about though.

Devs (and folk here) talk about the MVC framework (Codeigniter, Zend, Yii, CakePHP) but then also about the Bootstrap framework. I understand these to be two different frameworks, correct?

I will search online, but would what be the best way to explain it in fairly simply English?

Edit : is the Bootstrap framework limited to the front end? and the MVC framework more of an holistic design structure to the whole thing, both front and back end

MVC is a pattern (Model View Controller) a way to separate the concerns. Yes bootstrap is limited to the FE, other frameworks are Foundation 4 by Zurb and some others.

right so as time goes on and we get more and more feedback, Semaphore was quite right in saying that building a system from the ground up (both back and front end) is just not possible on our budget. The joys of not having a corporate budget...

we are seen two options, which are looking cost effective and not bad as an option.

http://membermouse.com/#
http://magento.com/

One or two local sites are using Magento successfully. Then there are some very large sites in USA that are using Membermouse.

I would appreciate any thoughts and feedback on both of these options. It's quite possible that these are going to be our only two viable options.

I went to a presentation on magento, its not that bad i guess. But you're still going to over step your 30K budget. Can't say anything about membermouse.
