We have a Honda Ballade Comfort Manual bought back in August 2013 and are looking to sell it for a used automatic without having to put in too much more money.

The reason for doing so is that earlier only my dad was driving, and I've also started to drive, and feel uncomfortable with a manual.

Odometer reading on our car currently is around 20k, so I'd say we're looking at driving around 12k annually. Most of the driving is in the city of Joburg and maybe a trip here or there every 4 months.

In terms of form factor, it's not really that important, although I do prefer a hatch to a sedan, crossover-SUV would be preferred but would be out of the budget me thinks. Fuel economy is important and a more economical car would definitely make me more happy.

So what are my options?

+1, why spend all that time and money just for auto..

I made the switch to an auto from a manual last month. Definitely not regretting it, especially if you live in the city and have to negotiate your way through rush hour traffic on a frequent basis. Auto is the awesomes.

Hardly the best advice for OP.

He mentioned his reason for choosing auto & Jozi sucks even more than other cities with a three pedal car.

@ OP off the top of my head a 2011/2012 Focus with the powershift box is a great option.

I do the same daily. Manual is fine.
Different strokes or gears rather

I live in Sasolburg, and my office is in sandton. I travel everyday. On top of that I'm field based so I drive even more, yeah sometimes I wish I had an auto but never enough to buy one. And that's with my travels, a normal oak shouldn't then need one.

But yeah as you said different gears..

Isn't that a troublesome gearbox?

I've tried numerous times to get a hang off driving the manual, but I always struggle, so keeping the manual isn't really an option.

After spending more than a decade driving on SA roads (mainly Pta and Jhb) I understand your frustrations. An auto box makes a world of difference! Carfind.co.za lets you enter max and min amounts you're willing to spend, then shows you a list of cars that fall within your budget. Unfortunately the option for auto vs manual is not yet functional, but it gives you some idea of the value of cars.

Thanks, I did have a look at carfind, autotrader, etc., my intention with this thread is to get recommendations from the members here on what they think are good auto options in my budget.

How much are you looking to spend? I traded in a manual for an automatic but the transmission type was not the reason. Have to say I do enjoy the automatic especially on long trips, it also makes cruise control a dream.

Looking to spend whatever I get for our Honda Ballade which I'm guessing will be around 120k, so won't be spending more than 150k.
