CT: the best place in SA
Hi guys, sorry if this isnt the right place, but since so many ISP's are now mingling hosting with ADSL, I thought it was the best place.

Basically, I need a quick setup for an online shop. I kow this osCommerce thingy is mostly used, and I think its all I need for now, ppl can just pay with EFT, I will look at another payment thing later.

Which ISP offers great hosting like this? I thought Afrihost, but I saw somewhere I could get free local hosting? The site will basically be an online store for my wife, she wants to start selling a line of products....only for SA consumers for now

Afrihost is good as far as support etc goes. I think Web Africa are cheaper than them though. Can't comment on their support.

Free, local hosting? Not sure if that exists but it's doubtful. Local hosting is generally much more expensive than international. And if it does exist, it will probably be ad-riddled like the international free hosts. Not good to convey an image of professionalism, especially when it comes to commerce!

Anyway, I'd go with WA if you insist on it being locally hosted.

Good luck to your wife:)

You would go for ampehosting.co.za
They provide local cPanel hosting with Fantastico - which is a collection of open source scripts. This will make it easy to install the OScommerce software onto the site.

Here: Local cPanel Hosting

TX for the heads up, :)

but i think like you said .. speculation .. and i did not deal with a Brian :)

all the emails and stuff i was send by .co.za and Technically Correct for the my site is good and legit

There are a few free local hosting promo's currently running. There is a push to get local content back onto local servers which is great.

The promo I've linked in my sig won't get you up and running with osCommerce since it doesn't have any databases included. But there are plenty of local hosting products that are now quite cost effective.

Why is http://www.technically.co.za hosted by cybersmart's shared hosting? I smell something fishy here if you get 10GB bandwidth for R89. That seems insanely cheap! and the unlimited package.

R169 for unlimited storage and unlimited bandwidth
Available Locations: South African Hosted

This is not possible!!! Scam?

It's probably "virtually" uncapped. Who would use more then 10GBs/month on a website?

Cost price for 10gb at most DC's for the server will be around R500 for local traffic minimum, that would exclude the cost of the hardware etc.. So I doubt that it is local as well...

Also most Control Panel's do not tally up all traffic for a site in the stats - so hosts that do sell local on cpanel etc need to be careful of their bandwidth allocation.

Yes indeed and cpanel is the biggest coulprit. Its so easy to bypass its traffic counter a baby could do it.

There are setting tweaks for cPanel's bandwidth accounting that can assist with preventing abuse.

Perhaps. It's thought Technically is run by someone with a history of scamming. No concrete evidence but if you're interested you can read this thread

Report this morning: My downloader PC restarted to the net didn't reconnect like I had it setup to do (Silly program didn't start when Windows started) but I reconnected it when I got out of bed this morning and everything has switched around.

Previously torrents were flying and HTTP was slow. Now HTTP is flying (Multi-threaded) and torrents are crawling.

Why don't you host it yourself over ADSL if it is a startup? I am hosting a site for a friend for free in Zen Cart, which is virtually identical to osCommerce using the EFT module and a basic free email server and dynamic DNS (also free through sitelutions.com).

His turnover this year was over R62K and it is time he thought about moving to a professional hosting, but it shows you what can be done over ADSL for free (pretty much).

PROS:
  • Learn about hosting and how it works, it is fun.
  • Use FREE everything including Dynamic DNS, Mail Servers and Web Servers.
  • Get your .co.za domains at cost price and learn how to manage them and keep them under your control without being held to ransom by your ISP, especially if you want to move later.
  • Learn how to keep your site simple but effective.

CONS:
  • The site will not run terribly fast because ADSL upload speeds are not fantastic.
  • It is a bit of work, and you have to make sure you make regular backups.
  • Your personal internet traffic will affect the speed of your site when it is use.
  • You need a 4Mbit connection, which costs money by itself, so if you don't have one already, it might not be worth the effort.
  • If the lights go out, so does your site.

Just a thought
