i recently bought a Samsung Plasma 5 series TV. standard sound is pretty average, so looking to incrementally build up a decent HTS. starting point would be a good (but affordable) AMP and a couple small speakers. I can then add more speakers and a sub later on.

I also need the amp to have audio output and headphone jacks so i can connect a headset. what do you guys recommend for around R3k - R5k ?

For a little more, the Marantz NR1403's a good option, or the Denon AVR-1612. They offer a range of functionality and good sound.

and in terms of where to buy from ? where can i go for good prices and advice ?

For advice, there are local AV forums with excellent tips and 2nd hand sections.

What are you requirements though?

I like the sound of Marantz and the NR 1403 has 4 HDMI inputs, which simplifies life IMO. Similarly, the Audyssey configuration system helped quite a bit with the initial setup, for a newbie. I wasn't looking for wall-shaking loudness, so the 50w/channel output was perfect, paired with decent bookshelves and a sub. I soon added a center speaker, which clearly improved dialogue quality.
