I liked the original C&C and Red Alert games - up to about Red Alert 2.

While not "serious" simulations, they had some grounding in reality (semi-real armoured units, infantry, etc), with just enough fun factor thrown in (I have played the AOE franchise, which are too long-winded for me).

RA3 and C&C3 upwards started becoming just way too cartoonish and OTT in the sci-fi department. The cleavage factor in RA3 was rather silly (aimed squarely at 13 year olds, IMHO).

So - any recommendations for something in the spirit of RA2, but a bit more modern?

Have you played C&C Generals? Thats awesome. And not cartoonish or over the top.

There's only one RTS to play in 2010 - Starcraft 2. It's not "semi real" but it's the best.

Maybe download the demo of Supreme commander 2 and see if that is to your liking. Or maybe the company of heroes are more to your liking.

If you consider AoE too long winded then you're pretty much SOL. Closest I reckon will be Empire Earth 2 w/ 10+ Epoch.

Maybe try Ground Control. First one is free but dated. Second one I haven't played. Alternatively Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance, but again graphics are dated and its pretty "long winded". 2nd SupCom is a lot more simplified & requires less micro.

R.U.S.E looks good....youtube it. Haven't played it though so can't say how much fun it is.

SC, Dawn of War, Supreme Commander, GC - well, I'm more interested in something closer to modern warfare, but not pure sci-fi (where modern is anything from WW II upwards).
Have Generals - nice, but for some reason I end up LANning RA2 more often.

I think I must check out Company of Heroes - kind of missed the boat there. I will also give the RUSE demo and World In Conflict a try.
I forgot to mention that I picked up EndWar recently, but haven't tried it, yet.

lol, a way of life??? click* click* click* - boring life bru

Yeah agreed! I have better things to do than see how well I can cannon rush someone. Woohoo, really exciting RTS game when a 5 minute game is considered long.

why I loved the days of Supreme Commander and really wish the original wasn't so rig intense cause then it may have gotten a good community going.

Starcraft, although really loving it, it just tends to annoy me in the sense that whenever I watch replays, the expectancy of what is going to happen is sometimes just too predictable.
watching say 10 replays after each other and in 5 of those you will either see MMM/sling+roach+bling/zealot+stalker+colossus+sentry

here and there you would see an exception but that is if you are lucky.

Try Supreme Commander 2. Its not as rig intensive, and also its also somewhat simplified. Some didnt like it, but I think its a great improvement over the original. Makes it much more playable.
