I am switching car insurers and am looking for recommendations for a car tracker. It's not required for the insurance because the cars aren't high value, but for security I would like to have a tracker in each car. (My old insurer is going to remove the current trackers).

My main requirement is obviously being able to see where a car is. That and accident monitoring would be my main requirements.

I see some offer a SARS logbook on their entry-level packages, so that would actually be nice too. (Would save a lot of time during filing season!).

Also, my old insurer uses CTrack which, although it worked, would always only update the location every minute (or few minutes?) or so when checking online.

What experiences have you had and what do you recommend?

I’m using Tracker Skytrax for the last 18 years, not for the recovery feature, but for the “panic button” feature.

The rest is bonus, the logbook, the car guard feature.

The only thing that would’ve helped in my hijacking was a button on the seat.

I don’t see the Skytrax option on their website, wonder what it compare to now.

The cheapest option your insurance will allow, car tracking is another grudge purchase for me, if thieves want my car they must take it.
Agreed. The OP says his insurance doesn't require a tracker, so my question is then why the **** would you put it in?

A decent tracking unit is more than just about finding the car after its stolen.

I have one in both my cars and helped when my wife was in an accident on the N2 late at night. I received an SMS from the unit, Netstar called me immediately to inform me of the accident and contacted the emergency services. By the time my wife called me I was already on my way to the scene.

When she used to work late I could track her on the website in real time. The unit also sends an SMS when she leaves or arrives at work or home. The N2 from Cape Town to Somerset West late at night can be dangerous.

You always want the absolute cheapest worst car tracking money can buy, because who wants a stolen car recovered??

Because you or your loved ones might be hijacked and kidnapped with the car. And it would be nice to locate them before they are murdered or dumped in the veld.

Fair enough.

I am however enough of a flat earther to believe that the crime syndicates are fed information by the tracking companies, and that having a unit installed actually increases your risk.

(I feel the same way about the firearm licensing and registry process)

Besides the accident alert, there are various apps to do everything you want from a tracking unit, and only you can be made aware of your wife's movements if that is how you want to set it up.

Apple has the Find Friends app, I am not sure if Android has similar, my girlfriends family uses Life360...

https://www.life360.com/

That is a pretty specific usecase. What about every other scenario (phone off, non-Apple phone, phone not with the victim, no cell signal, battery flat, no data, no airtime etc.)

The same can be said for a car tracking unit, they both have their blind spots and neither has 100% assurance of anything. At least with a phone tracking app YOU have a lot more control.

Life360 works like a charm. You can set your work location, home etc. Your partner will get notifications when you leave / arrive. Cost way less than paying for a tracking device.

My wife (for some reason) follow some of the truckers pages on facebook. They do seem to prefer us (MiX) however that is our fleet solutions. We do have have have Beame as a consumer platform and I have heard good things about it.
