Recommendations on a Netbook...

Regarding the HP MS thread that is running I see people seem to do some minor adjustments on it like GPU,RAM...Can you perhaps assist what I must add?

For a HTPC you'd probably only need 3GB of RAM, so add 2GB DDR3-1333 RAM (>R200) to the existing 1GB. Or 4GB (>R400) for a total of 5GB.

Then you'll need a graphics card, either HD5450 or HD6450 from AMD or GT220 from Nvidia (easier to get working in Linux). They're >R500. Try get a Silent one without fan.

For the AMD cards, Sapphire brand is best as they are likely to come with the single slot low profile bracket needed.

asus 1015

For a netbook with hd out the asus 1015 is a steal amd brazo 500gb hard drive in netbook size.....

sorry if this is necro-posting and thread hijacking, but I am getting a new laptop/netbook to lug around campus with me because the screen on my current Asus 1201n just cracked. The 2 I've found are the asus 1015b http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/asus-1015b-10ghz-dual-core-500gb-black-p-6581.html and the Asus K53U http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/asus-k53u-fusion-e350-dual-core-16ghz-320gh-p-6782.html

from what I've read the k53u is a better machine my only concern is that 15' laptop would be a bit of a pain in the ass to carry around all day.

so suggestions on which would be a better option in terms of a compromise and portability. I'm also very out of the loop in terms of hardware specs so other suggestions are welcome as well. max budget is R4000

Depends which you would prefer.

A bit of shoulder pain (15")

vs

A LOT of finger pain (10")

:D
