I'm moving into a house that has a lapa and I'd thought it would be a great idea to buy a netbook with maybe HD OUT sound and maybe HD connector for
watching movies on the odd occasion and put music on.Any input is welcome...

There's a Zacate E-350 AMD Fusion lappie going for under 4gs. Just don't get anything ION based.

The Atom based netbooks are all very similar, so don't spend too much on it. The main thing to look for is a 6 cell battery - the life of the 3 cell batteries is so limited that they are not all that portable. An example of a reasonable one for R2.5k is <http://www.pc-direct.co.za/p59043811/59043811--LENOVO-IdeaPad-S10--3.aspx>. I haven't shopped around, so you can probably find an ever better bargain.

These netbooks are fine for standard DVD quality files, but struggle on HD (BluRay rips). You will need something very different if you want to output these types of files to an external monitor.

A netbook with HD out? I don't think so. (Usually VGA, ethernet, 3xUSB, mic & ear are your external ports.)
A netbook running HD movies (and driving an external screen)? I don't think so.
You need a decent notebook with HDMI.

(This from someone who is a netbook fan.)

Netbooks are overpriced. Very overpriced.

Intel Atom CPUs aren't powerful enough to play HD anyway (even if they had HDMi output).

AMD Zacate is the only 2.5-10w CPU + GPU combination powerful enough to play HD content and I haven't seen any Zacate Netbooks around. Either way there is no guarantee even a Zacate based system will play everything. Buy the proper x86 CPUs or get a set-top media player.

I was hoping to find a thread ont his already :-)

I am looking for a netbook to use for internet surfing, checking mail, music, watching movies (SD), and general messing around.
I am considering the Dell Insperion Mini 10, but any other recommendations?

Does it have to be a netbook? Have you used a one before (10")?

I have, and I suppose it doesn't HAVE to, but I do like the small form factor associated with the netbooks.

I bought an Asus from landmark for R3000...

Plays L4D, portal 2, and haven't tried other games, HMDI out, 15.6" screen, haven't had ill performance form it yet.

It also does that multi touch track pad thing, where it makes using a mouse almost redundant!

here's the linky: http://www.landmarkpc.co.za/store/asus-k53u-fusion-e350-dual-core-16ghz-320gh-p-6782.html

I really think this is an epic laptop, and for the price, you can't argue!

Not bad, and I do like the AMD configuration :-)
I'm really looking for smaller though.

You all's thoughts??

Inspiron 1018 : Intel Atom Single Core N455(1.66GHz 667MHz FSB 512K L2 Cache)
Display : 10.1in WSVGA True Life Display (1024 x 600)
Memory : 2048MB (1x2048) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
Hard Drive : 320GB Serial ATA (5400RPM)
Battery : Primary 6-cell 48W/HR LI-ION
Graphics : Integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150
Wireless : BT 3.0 + WLAN 802.11b/g Combo Card

...for R2700-

Go for the N550 processor, dual core :)
plus not sure what your exact requirements are, but try n get a HDD with 7200RPM, copies faster :)

I was really really tempted with the Transformer, but honestly, for me it's more tablet than laptop. as I'll be using this a lot for typing a tablet really isn't an option for me.
I had a chat to our account manager at Dell, and she's going to see what they can do for me on the Inspiron as far as the CPU and HDD goes. They custom-build a lot of our desktop systems, just need to see if they have the same flexibility with their laptop systems.
