Hi guys.

Ok. To cut a long story short, I can no longer take the poor service that Mweb is providing me especially considering Im paying for their "Premium" uncapped package (4mbit)

I would like to ask if you guys can recommend me a good alternative ISP that offers good speeds for gaming, general downloading and not harsh throttling/shaping. I can understand the usual throttling on torrents/p2p during the day. But as long as Im not throttled at night then Im fine with it.

But what I cannot stand is the throttling of general downloading. Mweb Guy has been somewhat helpful in that at least he answers and tells me why my speeds are poor. However I suspect that these replies may not be 100% true words. Because I've not always had these speed issues. They have only popped up recently. And in the past a couple other times. But eventually the issue seems to magically correct itself. But now I am being told it's due to normal throttling. If this is the case, then that means they are throttling http on port 80 as well as after 12am and I cannot accept that kind of treatment for the price I pay.

In short, I want to move to another ISP as my Telkom account and my free Afrihost account works perfectly whereas Mweb does it. But these are both capped accounts and therefor, not very helpful to me since I download many things on Steam and watch YouTube plenty among streaming games on Twitch etc.

So can you guys please recommend me anybody who is decent? I must note that I need a fair AUP usage limit of at least 300-400GB a month before I get throttled. Anything lower is unlikely to be helpful to me as every few months, I find myself having to download a ton of updates for games or reinstall ones I previously uninstalled. So in those times, I find myself going near those limits and can't have anything lower.

Thanks in Advance.

If the Afrihost capped account works well for you, why not go for their business account? They won't throttle you after x amount of usage.

Most ISP's throttle high usage users because bandwidth is very expensive. Apparently R6 - R8 per GB, so you can't blame ISP's for throttling/shaping cheaper accounts (even Premium would be considered cheap in some circles - it just depends how much usage the user expects to get from the account). They only have a limited amount of bandwidth for their users to contend for.

If you're willing to schedule downloads to happen late at night, have a look at WebAfrica's 1+4 packages. I barely notice any slowdowns on my package (120G+480G) and those are in mid-evening and scattered. Rest of the time I can hit my line speed (20Mbps) without a problem.

Grimster101 and I have been working on the issue and have somewhat resolved it.

Another day, another person fed up with Mweb fake uncapped.

MWEB Uncapped is not fake. I have spent about 20 minutes explaining this to you, multiple times. I do not do it to hear the sound of my own voice, I do it for the sake of others, and because it's the truth. Please respect that.

Further, the OP's problem is not even related to the point which you are trying to raise with your incorrect referencing to throttle limits and not being uncapped. MWEB Uncapped is uncapped.

In other words, you're just another non subscriber spreading mistruths about the best quality ISP in SA, and I take issue with that because you are wrong, and you are being a disservice to others.

Thanks for the replies guys.

As PostmanPot did state, my recent issues are resolved. Thanks to both him and Mweb Guy. A reauth of my account and 30 mins of the router switched off resolved the issue. Though I am still wanting to move if I can get a better price. Because when I signed up for Mweb, I do not recall http downloads being shaped during the day. And I can honestly remember getting 400KB speeds during the day on http/s downloads before.

Im with PostmanPot on his post about Mweb. It isnt fake uncapped. However the throttling/shaping I do find to be rather harsh as of late. And as such, I would prefer to move elsewhere if things are not going to improve.

Will definitely look at Bruce and Fingerprintz suggestions. Thanks again!

All I can think of is that it's a Durban IPC issue. However I very much doubt this. It could even be related to your rote town. I've never noticed any HTTP shaping, and I'm quite sure it's prioritised. And the experience of everyone in the MWEB feedback thread correlates this.

This is what confuses me. Why did MWEB Guy say that it is not prioritized though.. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...ack-Part-3?p=14810340&viewfull=1#post14810340

Here he clearly states that its not prioritized. So I really dont know anymore except for the fact that my http downloads are now slow during the day by at least 50% or more I guess? I can only take the slower speeds and reply from him as confirmation on this.

I think he misinterpreted you, and only saw that you had mentioned "downloads."

As demonstrated to you, I have no problems with HTTP, and never have. I guarantee you it's the same for most people, bar some isolated cases like yours.

My TI data was cancelled this week. I signed up to CrystalWeb about ten minutes ago. I went for their 120 gig anytime plus 480 gig after hours. Also moving my line to them.

I will see how this goes.

I think you'll be very happy.

TI is a joke, I have a 50GB capped account with them. I don't think I've used it for anything but Windows updates, in the past 3 months.

TI experience seems to vary greatly from person to person.

I suppose time will tell I guess. Hopefully my speeds improve soon =]
I have actually been considering CrystalWeb. But still not sure.

I was having terrible experiences with them a couple of months back. But I must say, since around Jan this year it has been pretty good - Netflix always worked, Steam downloads were good, Youtube was so-so (still usable), torrents were fine 12-6. My biggest peeve with them is that if something goes wrong you feel like your hands are tied, this is something I don't want to go through again. Also I want a product without shaping (I know capped products are sometimes shaped, but it's a lot less).

But from what I have read around here, I should be happy with CW.

Welp... My speeds are back down to their awful selves again. I also got a Crystal Web test account (1GB Cap) Though when using it I also get the same speed issues x-x Tried to get telkom to reset port, switched router off for half an hour after that, still the issues persist. Im out of ideas. The router being off and port being reset even improved my sync stats a bit. So all in all, I don't know what I can do to fix my speed issues >_>

Guess I'll just have to hope things get better over time.

I suspected/mentioned it in the beginning, your fault is likely unrelated to the ISP. Sorry. :(

yeah. Seems to definitely be the case x-x I'll give it a few days and see if it improves. Or i'll have telkom come here and HOPEFULLY they fix whatever the issue is.

Afternoon, among the list of things you listed was torrents as well.

True HTTP is still prioritised, will fall in a different shaping pool compared to torrents, p2p, etc.

Well that just confirms that my issue is not related to you guys then. I apologize for thinking otherwise before.
