probably been posted a million times already...but not sure which ISP i should sign up with as I am expecting my ADSL to be installed today, it's a 4mb line for now.

Requirements:

1. being able to stream netflix, hulu, Comcast (from the USA) 24/7.
2. Some gaming but not all the time, usually in the evenings or early morning on the weekends.

that's it...

which ISP and package would one recommend?

I've got an uncapped 4Mbps bundle with Afrihost. Netflix and Hulu work 100%. Sometimes it takes a while to load the Netflix landing page but in the last 1.5yrs I've never once had issues once a video stream has started - and the quality is fantastic. I use the Hola Chrome/Firefox plugin to fiddle the geo-fencing nonsense.

Gaming has been an issue for the last 1.5 months though. PingPlotter tests show spikes in latency every few minutes or so - although to be fair, I haven't had the time to conclusively prove this is Afrihost's fault.

EDIT: I should add that the Afrihost support is the best I've experienced (once you get past the minions and get escalated to their proper customer care)

Do you use home or business uncapped?

My TI account, home uncapped, is running like a charm.

EDIT - I have a 10mb line but only because we run multiple simultaneous streams

I find that the IS backbone gives me the best streaming and gaming results, which leaves you with either Web Africa or Crystal Web.

Tried them both but I prefer the Crystal Web Home Premium Uncapped as it's a happy medium between home (requires a fair amount of usage management) and business (costs a fortune). That package also doesn't use the 1 month cancellation notice period, so if it doesn't work for you then easy enough to drop it before the next billing cycle (unlike a lot of other ISP's).

Hmmm does sound tempting but I do download console games. Do they offer trial accounts?

Ooh, 200GB might not be enough for you. If you don't mind scheduling heavy downloads between 12AM and 6AM every day (including weekends), check out WebAfrica Business (excellent for streaming) Uncapped. If you download too much during business hours, you will be throttled!!!! That's why I switched to Home Capped. Yes, they do offer trial accounts. Capped 1+1 GB only.

If only 1 person will be streaming the 4Meg. If 2 people, the 10Meg:

I've been using the MWEB premium 4meg uncapped for about 2 years now and it's amazing.
This being said you can get a 10meg with 120gigs for about R100 less.

I guess I'm posting my own question... Is the WebAfrica capped package good for gaming?
My roommate will be moving out at the end of the year (finally :S) and I'm thinking of a capped solution since I can regulate the internet I use.
One of the reasons I got the premium in the first place was to make sure my game latency was always minimized.
I watch a lot of twitch streams/youtube/series online so at the moment a 120gig package isn't worth the hassle if two people are using it.
So yeah I guess how is gaming on a capped line? Better? Worse? No different?

You can downgrade to standard then. The performance will be the same. Just the threshold is different.

Thanks everyone one. i'm going to trial Web Africa for a week or two, and then Crystal Web (i don't mind paying for both, but streaming is very important).

and i may even look at Telkom!

Why not just downgrade to standard?
