Die Poort!
Hi guys,

apologies for another 1 of those best phones, etc.

My wife is currently using a Samsung S3. It started freezing, etc and going bonkers in general. She is looking for a new phone, but do not want to break the bank.

She uses the phone for the following:

- Calls (WOW!!!:whistle:)
- Browsing
- Whatsapp
- Facebook
- Watching videos (Youtube primarily)

We are considering going the dual sim route, but not sure if it is worthwhile.

Budget wise, somewhere in the region of R200-250pm (phone only) or I guess about R3k.

I was looking at Sony Experia M4 Aqua, Samsaung Galaxy A3 / A5.... Support should something go wrong is important.

She makes about 6-7 hours worth of calls a month and uses about 2Gig of data.

Any suggestions? Looking for value for money as she is not into having the latest greatest tech available.

First you say phone only, then mention minutes and GBs of data.

Is she getting a voice and data contract?

You won't find a dual sim phone on contract. the mobile operators don't like that. getting from the Orange Store is probably the best option, but then you have to pay cash.

S3 is still a very capable device. Might as well get it repaired at Samsung service centers.

Phone only. Voice and data is separate item. I added it in case someone ask.

Willing to pay cash if it is a better option.

Dual sim has its advantages (especially data) , Im currently using a Huawei Mate 7 dual sim and my wife has just got the smaller Huawei P8 lite dual sim . Cell C does a couple of Nokia dual sims , The Sony M4 Aqua dual sim and the Huawei Mate 7 and Huawei P8 lite .

The Huawei P8 lite dual sim is around R209 per month I think at Cell C and thats with R100 airtime per month . I set my wifes one up over the weekend for her and it is actually a nice little device . It was snappy and handled the daily tasks etc without any issues . The camera was not too bad either considering the price point of the device .

Takealot had them for around R3300 (the dual sim variant - http://www.takealot.com/huawei-ascend-p8-lite-5-lte-smartphone/PLID38670425 ) .

I did see that Game had the single sim P8 Lite for R3000 , but honestly if you can get the dual sim version then go for it , that second sim especially when it comes to data comes in plenty handy with getting a better data rate . For example Iv put a Telkom prepaid sim in for my wife which she is using for data and now at least I dont have to worry about any OOB data issues (as she sometimes forgets to check her data bundle balance or set the data app) . The version my wife got from Cell C was also running Lollipop out of the box (which was a bit of a surprise) and so far she is loving it .

I got the wife the P8 lite (white) and she loves it. I just ordered the P8 lite as well (black).

For our needs, it's the perfect price for features/value. We don't do any heavy gaming etc so the processor meets our needs. For all the needs you mentioned, I think it would be a good device.

My wife got the black dual sim variant over the weekend and it's actually a pretty nice little device . Have not tried intense games or anything on it ,but it has handled all daily tasks like messaging , calls , browsing , facebook etc etc with no issues at all and no lag . Its a decent device at its price point especially the duel sim variant .

samsung have a life timer that after a while kills the phone;

if your willing, root and install a custom rom on the phone;

problem solved, no need to shell out money to buy another phone......

had exactly same issue with my samsung, as I like keeping my phone for long, rooting and romming fixed my issues;

after samsung service centre wasn't very helpful;

Like an actual timer, or they tend to go bad after a certain period of time?

look Im just guessing here; but a actual timer since first activation;
think about it; you want people to buy a new phone after a while,
what better way than to "cripple" some of the functions after a while;
(easy enough to do its ROM based anyway)

conspiricy maybe, but quite a few samsung owners report this happening usually after 2 years;

if your warrenty over; just root and rom it;
plenty of sites and lots of experts on mybb that show you how;

got nothing to lose, youll even save some cash on buying new phone;

just my 2c worth,

This happened to my 1 month old Galaxy A3... Just suddenly got slow.

Generally speaking, a factory reset sorts that out
