I've tested KonaKart, OSComerce and Joomla with VirtuaKart...

but which e-commerce software would you recommend is best for selling stuff online? [pref free,as it will be a hobby at first]

I use oscommerce. I find it the fastest and easiest to use, and with some skillz you can actually make a pretty good looking site, not mind blowing eye candy, but good enough and the speed is really great.

What is also nice is using Joomla, you can definately get a much smarter looking site using Joomla.

I have used Zen Cart quite a bit, it is very similar to OSCommerce, I expect they have the same root. It also has a lot of payment processor modules.

Joomla using Virtuemart is easy to setup and get a basic eCommerce store going. I was involved in a project where we listed over 1 million products with Joomla version 1.0

I'm told Magento works quite well. But uses lots of resource. It definitely appears to be better designed with ECommerce in mind. I have not found 1 Joomla template that caters properly for eCommerce. In terms of usability and being optimized for conversions.
