Gnome = more stable and simple
KDE = eye candy n fancy
Ive managed to mess up kde more times than i can count, but luckily a complete reinstall of your desktop, does not mean loosing a single setting. All your icons, bookmarks, history are still there, in both desktops, no matter if you install or remove the other.
There are other desktops. like blackbox and fluxbox. When I need to do simple stuff, or I have broken my KDE, i normaly end up in fluxbox repairing the damage I have done.
This might be a difficult concept for some windows users to understand, that of multiple desktops
