Of late I've noticed that more and more people tend to gun for the traffic light long after the light turned red - they're not willing to wait, but risk it and shoot the red light as they're too impatient to wait for their turn at the green light.

Best that you can do for now is :

1. Slow down when approaching a traffic light which've turned green for you, just to make sure no blathering idiots still try to jump the red light.
2. Invest in a proper dash cam.
3. Wait a few seconds more after the light turned green to make sure there's no blathering idiots trying to jump his/her red lights.

I know that the law's on your side, but waiting for two or three seconds more just to make sure all is safer will make things easier for you.

Here in Durban it is out of control.
Metro police watch the taxis go through red robots and do squat .
Some of them own taxis.

4. Look both ways before proceeding through the intersection

I do that instead of #3, has saved me on two occasions so far. But it is getting beyond ridiculous. This along with turning in straight only lanes, and going straight in turn only lanes. I can see I'll be "waving" at a few people at a new intersection nearby my home.

Been discussed on this forum many times... My favorite game is to hoot at them and then score how many of them flip you the bird or scream abuse at you vs the ones who stare directly ahead like there's nothing to see here.

I experience the latter, with a scared/panicked look on the face

+1

All along Smith Street. Metro stand around talking k@k and ignore it.

Do you think its maybe because they're afraid of being hijacked if they actually stop?

I get that every day. Kraft road offramp from the N12 and going into Elandsfontein. One turning lane magically turns into two.

What really gets me are the yellow lanes on the highway all the way from the Edenvale onramp untill the Marlborough offramp. Taxis being followed by cars just flying past in the emergency lane. JMPD had a few officers at the onramps the last week or so and they were busy all the time but why can't they have one or two officers at every onramp every day. They would make a killing.

People will keep pushing the limits my friend - it'll only get worse.

SA traffic is a war zone...raw reaction times and situational awareness is the only thing that will save you.

It's worse on Empire road these days, with the retarded new robots for the completely moronic, idiotic, spastic, stupid etc etc BRT system people just ignore the red robots and drive. I had a guy hooting and shouting because I actually stopped at a red!!! He then proceeded to reverse and drive past me swearing the whole time and straight through a red...

I know the lights are completely useless at those intersections but the law is the law

It has become the standard thing to do, as there is no action from traffic police to stop this.
The amount of times I have nearly been rear ended by some dumb f..k when stopping for a red light or even better stopping when the lights are out order and flashing red is crazy.

It is so bad at the Kenridge traffic lights (shopping centre) that the cars that want to turn left (green arrow on for them) cannot turn as the vehicles from the opposite side just keep turning in. They only stop once the green arrow has gone off. I've seen how many near misses there.

People are idiots.

Simple tip a friend told me once: There is no such thing as a green traffic light

Remember that bad accident a few weeks back where the truck took out those vehicles that had just pulled away from the traffic light? Some guy still caught it on camera. Could have been prevented if they had looked both ways before pulling off. I also see a lot of people pulling off before the light is green.

Stop streets are also useless.

There are very few accidents these days- only infringements of traffic regulations that result in collisions.

It just goes to show how nonsensical most people are. Logically, sticking to traffic regulations makes roads safer (that's why we have regulations). There would be fewer collisions, fewer injuries, fewer deaths, fewer insurance claims. Insurance, medical etc would be much cheaper.

But, alas, the human being is a non-sensical creature.

Yeah its really bad in Durban lately...

I've nearly taken out quite a few people who jumped the red light.... sometimes entails them swearing and cursing at me. Once or twice I've had the pleasure of "chasing" them down... and it amuses the hell out of me to see someone look over their shoulder in their car, get freaked out and scamper off.

On the odd occasion that I do drive and end up in front at a traffic light I try to nail it as soon as the light goes green, if there are cars trying to sneak across on a red light I keep the horn blaring and I try to cut them off or pretend that I am going to crash into them.

Nothing gets your heart racing like that and its OK because they started it.
