Reflowing a Graphics card using an oven

thanks for all the instructions, now, i don't have a oven, will a convection oven work if i place it on the rotary tray?

It's already messed up how much more damage could i do to it? lol
 
Lol, sorry, I thought that first pics I looked at was the result of the oven bake.
I just love the result though.

Now I just hope that I'm not gullible and you aren't making fools of us.
 
Erm...

I fixed my 5600FX with a soldering iron back in '05 ... it's still working to this day.

Artifacting and lines across the screen even when booting became ridiculous after a while.

Before you go through all this trouble, have a look at your capacitors - if they've mushroomed, replace them all. This is normally the problem.

Purchased a soldering iron the other day, along with 500g of solder and been repairing all sorts of things.
 
i was gonna do this to my 9800gt that fell 2m into a brick wall
but then it got scared and started working again :p
so i didnt have to do it
 
It works, if you do it right. :)

Been on gpureview site for a few years now and is probably the best DYI fix out there.

I told my friend to do it a few months ago. The card had lots of artefacts on the display...now works fine again!
 
Reflow Success!

Wanted to start a thread about this but I see this one now.

I remember reading about this quite some time back (Edit: lol I see it was this thread, I posted on page one), but it completely slipped my mind when my Geforce 9800 GT broke last week. /It had lines on the screen during POST and the driver started to crash when playing games and then at times the PC would blue screen and reboot.

I bought another card to replace it but the word "reflow" came up in another thread and I had a light bulb moment.

I goggled it and found a few guides online.

Difference to the OP is that I used thermal paste on the processor afterwards and I heated the oven to 200 degrees Celsius.

I now have a spare card to use in my older PC. Pretty stoked that this actually worked.

Not sure how long it will last but so far so good.

Glad to hear your success. I've used this many times since I posted this on various other electronic components (An old Nokia phone even)
 
Good job there.

I guess your old card still had the old school tin/lead solder which melts at the 180 to 190 degree mark so your card melted below the 200 degree oven setting.

More recently cards are manufactured with the lead-free solders, which typically has melting points 30 degrees above that of the tin/lead solders, meaning you'd have to crank your over up by 30 degrees to achieve melting point. Just that much closer to the point of melting other things on the board too, which aren't meant to be melted. :)

I think I said this before. I believe the problem with these cards are the tin whiskers being formed from early lead-free solder, which was really out of control. Heating it in the oven just hot enough to melt the tin whiskers will solve the problems in this case...
